Description

Tiling a staircase leaves one hard problem: the front edge of every tread. A cut tile arris chips, and a strip screwed on afterwards looks like an afterthought. This heavy duty tile-in nosing solves it as the tiles go down. The 56mm x 55mm aluminium profile beds into the tile adhesive, its perforated tiling leg sits under the tread tile, and the tile finishes flush against it. You get a protected, slip-resistant, colour-contrasted edge, backed by tested slip figures and published light reflectance values. It suits 10mm or 12.5mm ceramic and porcelain tiles, with a 50mm insert in eleven colours.

Why it works

Tested grip

The insert is a REACH-compliant flexible PVC rated R11 on the DIN 51130 ramp test, with pendulum values of 66 dry and 54 wet to BS 7976-2. The UK Slip Resistance Group rates 36 or more as low slip potential, so it stays well inside that band when wet.

The aluminium takes the knocks, not the tile

A 6063-T6 aluminium extrusion takes the heel strikes, trolley wheels and dropped tools that would chip an exposed tile edge. A central T-web and three feet brace the tread, and the 55mm apron covers the riser tile.

Locked into the tiling

Adhesive squeezes up through the anchoring holes in the 18mm tiling leg and grips the profile from both sides, and a keyed rear wall gives the tread tile a square edge to butt against.

Contrast you can measure

At 56mm on the tread and 55mm on the riser, the profile matches the 55mm minimum Approved Document K (clause 1.7a) sets for contrasting nosings outside dwellings. Approved Document M treats contrast as adequate above a 30-point difference in light reflectance value (LRV), and every insert's LRV is listed below. It meets DDA guidance and Building Regulations.

  • 56mm tread x 55mm riser, 6063-T6 aluminium
  • For 10mm or 12.5mm tiles; perforated 18mm tiling leg
  • 50mm PVC insert, R11, PTV 66 dry / 54 wet
  • Eleven insert colours with published LRVs
  • Pre-drilled, with pips to cap the screw heads

Where it is used

Office and reception stairs, schools, hotels, retail flights, hospitals and care homes, and domestic hallways in porcelain or ceramic. It also suits changing room and poolside steps, where the wet slip value matters, and can be used with wood, laminate and stone treads.

Choosing the right option

Tile depth first. Measure the tile you are laying. A 12.5mm tile in the 10mm version sits proud of the nose; between sizes, take the deeper version and build up the adhesive bed.

Then colour, by LRV. Pick an insert at least 30 points away from your tile's LRV. On pale porcelain (around LRV 70), Black, Brown, Cobalt Blue, Red and Midnight Grey all qualify. On dark tiles, use White, Yellow or Canvas. At home you can match the tile instead.

Then length. One nosing per tread, in the shortest length that covers the stair width. 1.0m suits most homes; 3.22m runs a wide flight in one piece.

Installation, use and care

Fit while tiling; it cannot go on a finished stair. Cut to length with a fine-tooth blade and file the edge. Fix any riser tile first, then bed the profile into the adhesive so it pushes through the anchoring holes, with the apron covering the riser tile. Lay the tread tile over the leg and grout. Clean inserts with neutral detergent, rinse and let dry before use. Never use solvent cleaners on the aluminium.

Frequently asked questions

Can I fit this to a staircase that is already tiled?

No. The tiling leg sits under the tread tile, so the nosing goes down first. For finished stairs, choose a surface-mounted nosing.

How is it fixed?

It is bedded into the tile adhesive. The adhesive keys through the perforated leg and the tread tile locks it in, so no screws are needed on a sound substrate. It is also pre-drilled, with pips to cap the screw heads, if you want to add screws and plugs (not supplied).

What is the difference between the 10mm and 12.5mm versions?

Only the depth of the tile channel. Section, insert, colours and lengths are the same.

Can the insert be replaced later?

Yes. It is a separate PVC strip, so it can be renewed without lifting any tiles.

Is it suitable for outdoor steps?

It is used on covered external steps and keeps a pendulum value of 54 when wet. On exposed steps, use frost-resistant tile and exterior-grade adhesive.

Faced the challenge of renovating a corporate building entrance, and the choice had to enhance that modern aesthetic throughout. Wasnt sure at first, when I ordered the product because these things can be hit or miss. It arrived well-packaged, and popping it into place was smoother than expected for something so sturdy. The fit was spot on for tiling over our busy station steps, and handling the daily rush of feet has been impressive without any looseness at joints or wear at the front edge.

Got this for tiling the staircase in our hotels entrance, and I couldnt be happier with how easy it was to integrate into the job. The stair nosing seamlessly completed each step without distracting from the elegant marble tiles. As someone overseeing several fittings, I genuinely appreciate a product that offers both style and practicality right from the start.

Robust and durable, this stair nosing was straightforward to fit and stood up well as we added it to the steps outside our workshop. I found it a breeze to cut down to size with a standard tile saw, which saved us heaps of time during installation. Its been exposed to all sorts of weather and machinery movement, holding its own admirably over the months.
