Description

Some step edges will not take a rigid nosing. A concrete stair with a worn, rounded arris; a tiled tread a couple of millimetres out of true; a carpeted flight in a rented flat where drilling is not on the table. Screw an aluminium angle onto any of those and it rocks, sits proud at one end and leaves a shadow gap you can see from the bottom of the flight. This 52 x 40mm flexible PVC nosing works the other way round: a soft, bendable angle with the adhesive strip already applied to the back, so it takes up the shape of the nose it is pressed onto instead of fighting it. It goes down with a cloth, a knife and hand pressure.

Why it works

Flexible PVC that holds its shape

The manufacturer describes the profile as a special PVC mixture that is highly flexible and has a shape memory feature, so it returns to its moulded form rather than staying kinked. That is what lets the 52mm tread leg lie flat on a step that is not quite flat, and the 40mm front leg follow a nose traffic has rounded off. It is also why the manufacturer recommends it for stairs already covered with tile, panel or any other finishing material, whatever the thickness.

A grooved tread band, not a separate insert

The grip comes from grooves moulded into the tread face itself. There is no carborundum strip, no bonded insert and no channel, so nothing works loose or needs replacing. The manufacturer states that the grooved section prevents slipping, that the profile carries more grooves than comparable products, and that the groove shape is shallow enough to mop clean. The profile also wraps the full front face of the step, taking knocks that would otherwise land on the bare arris; the manufacturer states that it protects step edges against mechanical damage and that the material is free from compounds harmful to people and animals.

Where it is used

Domestic staircases and shared flights in converted houses and small blocks. Office and retail stairs where the treads are carpeted and a screw-fixed nosing would mean lifting the covering. Tiled steps in kitchens and back-of-house areas. Refurbishment work where a stair needs a grippier edge without taking the flight apart, and rented property where a drill-free fix is the only option.

Choosing the right option

Measure the going of your tread and the drop at the front of the step first. The 52mm leg needs 52mm of clear tread to sit on, and the 40mm leg wants a front face at least that deep, or it will stand proud at the bottom. On a deep bullnose that curls back under itself, measure around the curve rather than straight down.

For length, work to your stair width and buy the next size up: 1.2m covers most domestic flights, 2.0m suits wider communal and commercial stairs. Colour is a visibility decision as much as a decorative one: black reads as a strong edge marker against pale concrete, terrazzo or light carpet, while grey sits quieter on mid-grey commercial carpet.

Installation, use and care

Cut to length with a sharp knife or a fine-toothed saw; the material cuts cleanly at room temperature. Vacuum the tread, degrease it and let it dry; tape will not hold on dust, polish or a damp screed. Peel the liner back a few inches at a time and work along the step, pressing the nose down first and the tread leg after, so you do not trap a bubble at the front. Press the length firmly and keep traffic off while the bond develops. On a porous, rough or painted substrate add a PVC-compatible contact adhesive: the manufacturer lists the fixing method as glue or tape. Clean with a damp mop and a neutral cleaner; avoid solvents.

Frequently asked questions

Will the self-adhesive backing hold on carpet?

On a low-pile contract carpet it generally will, provided the surface is clean and the pile is sound. On a deep or cushioned domestic pile the tape has little to key into, so use a PVC-compatible contact adhesive.

Can I use this outside?

We would not specify it for external steps. The manufacturer publishes no exterior, UV or weathering rating for this profile and does not list it among its external ranges, so there is nothing to support an outdoor claim. For steps open to the weather, ask us for an aluminium profile with an exterior-grade insert.

Does it have a slip resistance rating?

Not one the manufacturer publishes. The grip comes from the moulded grooves in the tread face, and the manufacturer states that this grooved section prevents slipping, but no pendulum (PTV) or ramp-test (R) figure is published for this line. Where a stair must be specified against a measured figure, ask us for a profile that carries tested data.

Will it fit a rounded or worn step edge?

That is what the flexible profile is for. The manufacturer describes it as crafted for rounded treads, and the PVC follows a curve a rigid aluminium angle would bridge. Check you still have 52mm of flat tread behind the curve for the adhesive to grip.
