Description

This is the heavy-duty member of the hard-nose PVC family: a one-piece stair nosing 60.4mm across the tread and 32mm down the riser, with a square front nose and a wide anti-slip insert bedded into the tread channel. It is the profile to reach for when a stair takes real traffic and a slimline section would not last — shared stairwells in flats, school and college stairs, back-of-house and service flights, and any commercial staircase getting a new floor covering. It caps and protects the step edge, stops floor coverings fraying at the nose, and gives a defined, slip-resistant tread in the same operation.

The body is black — the colour you choose is the insert

Settle this before you order. The manufacturer states plainly that "the profile is made from black PVC", and the eleven colour options on this page refer to the anti-slip insert set into the tread channel, not to the nosing itself. Choose Cobalt Blue and you receive a black nosing carrying a blue band. That is the design working as intended: the dark carrier disappears against the step while the insert does the job of marking the edge.

Slip resistance

The manufacturer states that the standard PVC insert achieves R11 on the inclined platform test to DIN 51130:2010, from a corrected average of six shod results at 22.9 degrees, together with a pendulum value of PTV 66 dry and PTV 54 wet to BS 7976-2:2002. The UK Slip Resistance Group treats a PTV of 36 or above as low slip potential, so both figures sit comfortably inside that band. The insert is a REACH-compliant flexible PVC extrusion specified for non-scuff stair use.

Contrast you can specify, not guess at

The manufacturer publishes a light reflectance value for every insert, which is what a specifier asking for a contrasting nosing actually needs: White 79.9, Yellow 55.7, Canvas 53.2, Ice Grey 42.1, Beige 41.1, Dolphin Grey 27.6, Midnight Grey 12.8, Red 10.6, Cobalt Blue 9.2, Brown 9.1 and Black 4.5. The black carrier is itself 4.5. Set the insert LRV against the LRV of your tread finish and the difference becomes something you can demonstrate on paper.

A rear edge that feathers in

The back of the profile tapers down to 3mm, so it runs out into the tread rather than standing proud of it. On a refurbishment, where the nosing is going down onto an existing screed, board or carpet, that taper is the difference between a clean detail and a raised back edge that becomes a trip hazard of its own.

Where it is used

Internal stairs in offices, retail units, schools and colleges, hotels, healthcare and community buildings, and the communal stairs of flats and housing association blocks. It suits domestic stair refurbishments too, particularly carpeted flights where the nose has worn through. It is an internal profile: for external applications the manufacturer supplies a separate external-grade anti-slip insert range, and that is what to specify outdoors or in a wet area, not this one.

Choosing the right option

Start with length. The 3.22m is the manufacturer's stock bar and gives the least waste on a wide flight or where several treads can be cut from one length; the 1.0m, 1.5m and 2.0m are cut from the same extrusion and suit domestic flights and small repairs. Order the length above your going and trim on site rather than butting two pieces on a single tread.

Then choose the insert on contrast rather than on taste. Where the nosing has to read against a pale tread, take the dark end of the range — Black, Brown, Cobalt Blue, Red or Midnight Grey. Against a dark carpet or a dark screed, White, Canvas or Ice Grey will do the work. Yellow at 55.7 is the usual pick where a hazard needs flagging in a service stair or plant room. If the stair is external or regularly wet, this insert is the wrong specification: use a Tredsafe-insert profile instead.

Installation, use and care

The manufacturer specifies this sequence: make sure the steps are dry, clean, free of debris and level; if the profile is pre-drilled, use the holes to mark your drilling positions; drill and plug the step; apply a suitable adhesive to the underside of the nosing and set it down; screw down with appropriately sized screws; then fit the insert, or the insert pip, over the screw heads to conceal them. Fixings and adhesive are not supplied. For cleaning, the manufacturer asks that inserts be washed with a neutral detergent, rinsed thoroughly with clean water, and left completely dry before foot traffic returns.

Frequently asked questions

If I choose Red, is the whole nosing red?

No. The nosing body is black PVC in every option. The colour you select is the anti-slip insert that sits in the tread channel, so a Red order arrives as a black profile carrying a red band.

I have seen this profile advertised with "over 75 colour combinations" — why are there eleven here?

Because those are not the same thing. The manufacturer offers a wider insert chart and made-to-order channel options, which multiply out to a large number of combinations on request. The eleven on this page are the stocked insert colours you can order directly. If you need a colour from the wider chart, contact us and we will check availability and lead time before you commit.

Can I use this on outdoor steps?

It is an internal profile. The manufacturer supplies a separate external-grade anti-slip insert range for external applications; if your steps are outside or regularly wet, specify an external-grade insert nosing instead of this one.

Is it DDA or Part K compliant?

No such claim is published for this line, so we do not make one. The manufacturer publishes slip resistance and per-colour LRV figures for it, which is the data a specifier normally works from, but it does not badge the profile against Approved Document K or M, BS 8300 or DDA.

Will it work on carpeted stairs?

Yes. It is commonly fitted at the front edge of carpeted treads, capping the carpet at the nose where it wears first. Make sure the carpet is properly fixed and the substrate is sound beneath the nosing before screwing down.

Ordering and delivery

Pricing is the same across all eleven insert colours for a given length, so you are choosing on specification rather than on cost. Select your insert colour and length above. If you need a larger quantity than shown, or a colour from the manufacturer's wider insert chart, contact us before ordering and we will confirm availability and lead time.
