Description

If you are re-edging a stair in an office, school or apartment block, this is the profile that caps the step and gives you a defined, slip-resistant leading edge in one piece. It is a hard-nose PVC stair nosing measuring 67mm across the tread and 32mm down the riser, with a shallow ramp at the front so the transition onto the step is gradual rather than a hard lip. The extrusion is a single moulded section with a wide anti-slip insert bedded into the tread channel. It is specified where a stair is getting a new floor covering, or where a worn concrete or timber nose needs rebuilding and protecting rather than replacing.

The body is black — the colour you choose is the insert

This is the one thing to get right before you order. The profile is made from black PVC, and the thirteen colour options on this page refer to the anti-slip insert set into the tread, not to the nosing itself. Choose Red and you receive a black nosing carrying a red band. That is the point of the design: the dark carrier recedes against the step while the insert does the visual work of marking the edge.

Slip resistance

The standard PVC insert achieves R11 on the inclined platform test to DIN 51130:2010, from a corrected average of six shod results at 22.9 degrees, and a pendulum value of PTV 66 dry and PTV 54 wet to BS 7976-2:2002. The UK Slip Resistance Group treats any PTV of 36 or above as low slip potential, so both figures sit well inside that band. The insert is a REACH-compliant flexible PVC extrusion specified for non-scuff stair use.

Contrast you can actually specify

Every insert has a published light reflectance value, which is what you need when a specifier has asked for a contrasting nosing: White 79.9, Sand 70.3, Haze 66.2, Cloud 59.0, Yellow 55.7, Canvas 53.2, Ice Grey 42.1, Beige 41.1, Dolphin Grey 27.6, Midnight Grey 12.8, Red 10.6, Brown 9.1 and Black 4.5. The black carrier itself is 4.5. Set the insert LRV against the LRV of your tread finish and you can demonstrate the difference rather than guess at it.

A rear edge that feathers in

The back of the profile tapers down to 3mm, so it runs out into the tread instead of standing proud of it. That matters on a refurbishment where the nosing is going down onto an existing screed or board and a raised back edge would become a trip hazard of its own.

Where it is used

Internal stairs in offices, retail units, schools and colleges, hotels, healthcare and community buildings, and the shared stairs of flats and housing association blocks. It also suits domestic stair refurbishments where a timber nose has worn through. It is an internal profile: a separate external-grade anti-slip insert range is available for external applications, and that is the specification to use outdoors or in a wet area, not this one.

Choosing the right option

Start with length. The 3.22m is the stock bar and is the one to take if your flight is wide, or if you want to cut several treads from a single length with the least waste; the 1.0m and 2.0m are cut down from the same extrusion and suit domestic flights and small repairs. Order the length above your going and trim on site rather than butting two pieces on one tread.

Then pick the insert on contrast rather than on taste. Where the nosing has to read against a pale tread, the dark end of the range does the work — Midnight Grey, Red, Brown or Black. Against a dark tread, take White, Sand or Haze. Yellow at 55.7 is the usual choice where a hazard needs flagging in a service stair or plant room. If the stair is external or regularly wet, this insert is the wrong one: use a Tredsafe-insert profile instead.

Installation, use and care

Fit it in this sequence: make sure the steps are dry, clean, free of debris and level; if the profile is pre-drilled, use the holes to mark your drilling positions; drill and plug the step; apply a suitable adhesive to the underside of the nosing and set it down; screw down with appropriately sized screws; then fit the insert, or the insert pip, over the screw heads to conceal them. Fixings and adhesive are not supplied. For cleaning, inserts should be washed with a neutral detergent, rinsed thoroughly with clean water and left completely dry before foot traffic returns.

Frequently asked questions

If I choose Red, is the whole nosing red?

No. The nosing body is black PVC in every option. The colour you select is the anti-slip insert that sits in the tread channel, so a Red order arrives as a black profile carrying a red band.

Can I use this on outdoor steps?

It is an internal profile. A separate external-grade anti-slip insert range is available for external applications; if your steps are outside or regularly wet, specify an external-grade insert nosing instead of this one.

Which standards does it meet?

Its slip resistance meets BS 7976-2:2002 and DIN 51130:2010, and every insert colour has a published LRV figure, which is the data a specifier needs for visual contrast.

Can it be cut on site?

Yes. The PVC section cuts cleanly with a fine-tooth saw, so you can trim each length to the going of your step.

How does this differ from the 56x32.5mm version?

The tread depth and the nose. This one is 67mm across the tread with a ramped front; the slimline 56x32.5mm is narrower and straight-fronted. Both share the same black PVC body and the same standard insert range.

Ordering and delivery

Every colour and length combination on this page carries the same price for a given length, so you are choosing on specification rather than on cost. Select your insert colour and length above. If you need a quantity beyond what is shown, or a colour from the wider insert chart that is not listed here, contact us before ordering and we will confirm availability and lead time.

Came quickly, well within the week, in sensible packaging. We fitted the edge trim at a hotel where durability and safety are vital, and it felt secure underfoot even on rainy days with plenty of foot traffic. With this reliable stair nosing installed, my confidence in navigating up and down those stairs has improved significantly.

Took a punt on this anti-slip product mainly due to its quick delivery promise, and I must say, Im pleasantly surprised. The packaging held up well against the wet conditions upon arrival, and the stair nosing itself fit our outdoor deck steps perfectly at the block. Given its robust design and the added safety it provides during rainy spells, I’m considering ordering more for other areas around our property.

Put it in ages ago to fix up the steps at our local school where I volunteer, which sees a lot of stomping feet every day. Despite the daily onslaught by kids and teachers alike, its held the line remarkably well without any slips or wear cropping up. Bit of a fiddle to cut just right initially for fitting but worth the effort for how sturdy it’s remained through all that traffic!

Got this for enhancing the look of our office entryway steps, and it arrived swiftly, just two days after placing the order. The packaging kept the pvc stair nosing immaculate during transit—a relief given its essential role in refreshing the entrance. It went on easily and does wonders for giving a neat finish to what were rather dull concrete stairs.

Exceptionally nifty! Trying to revamp the steps in our library, I needed a bit that’d hug each stair snugly and make them safe. This pvc stair nosing was simple to trim and fit; surprisingly straightforward, given past experiences that ended with more sawdust than progress. With its ease of handling, it caught me off guard—in a pleasant way!
