Description
If you are refurbishing a worn staircase and do not want to lift the covering to do it, this flexible PVC stair nosing is the straightforward answer. It is a one-piece angle that wraps the front of the step — a 70mm band across the tread and a 40mm face down the riser — and it bonds straight onto the existing finish. Because the material is flexible rather than rigid, it follows a step edge that is no longer perfectly square, which is exactly the situation on most stairs that need re-edging. Supplied in black or grey, in 1.2m, 1.5m and 2.0m lengths, it cuts cleanly with a fine-tooth saw or a sharp knife.
Why it works
The grooves do the gripping
The whole of the 70mm tread band is moulded with fine longitudinal grooves rather than a separate insert strip. There is no channel and no carborundum or PVC insert to fit, so there is nothing that can work loose, lift at the ends or wear through to the carrier. The manufacturer states that the profile carries more grooves than comparable products on the market, and that the grooved section is what provides the anti-slip and fall protection on the step. It also states the design makes the profile simple to clean, which matters on a ribbed surface in a building that gets mopped.
Flexible, with shape memory
The manufacturer describes a unique PVC blend that is highly flexible with shape memory — it returns to its moulded angle after being rolled or pressed. On site that means it takes up small irregularities in an old tread rather than bridging them and leaving a hollow under the nose. The same flexibility is why it is fitted with adhesive or tape rather than screws. The manufacturer also states that the profile protects step edges against physical damage, and that the material is free from compounds harmful to humans and animals.
It goes over what is already there
The manufacturer states it is compatible with carpet, tile, panel or a finished stair of any thickness, and that it refurbishes old PVC-profiled steps without disassembly. That is the practical case for it: the covering stays down, the flight stays in use, and the edge is renewed in an afternoon.
Where it is used
Internal stairs in offices, schools, surgeries and care settings, where a worn nose needs re-edging without closing the flight. Communal stairs in flats and HMOs. Domestic staircases over carpet or laminate, particularly where a previous PVC edge has perished. Back-of-house steps in retail and hospitality.

Choosing the right option
Measure the full width of the tread first and order the next length up, then trim. Not every length is made in both colours: the 1.2m and 2.0m are black only, while the 1.5m is made in black and grey. If you need grey across a flight of wide steps, 1.5m is the length to work with. Black is the more forgiving choice on a dark carpet or a busy commercial stair, where scuffing shows less; grey reads better against pale vinyl, terrazzo and light carpet tiles. Check the depth of your tread too — the 70mm band sits on top of the covering, so it will take 70mm out of the usable going.
Installation, use and care
Clean and dry the step edge, remove any loose or perished material, and dry-fit before committing. The manufacturer specifies glue or tape: use a flexible construction adhesive suited to the covering, or a high-bond double-sided tape, and weight the profile down while it cures. Cut with a fine-tooth saw or a sharp trimming knife. Once fitted it needs no maintenance beyond normal cleaning — vacuum the grooves and wash with a mild detergent. Avoid solvents and abrasive pads, which dull the surface.
Frequently asked questions
Is this suitable for outdoor steps?
We list it for internal stairs. The manufacturer publishes no exterior, UV or weathering rating for this profile and does not file it in its external range, so we are not going to claim one. If the steps are outside, ask us and we will point you at a profile that is specified for it.
Does it have an anti-slip insert?
No. The grip comes from grooves moulded into the tread band itself — there is no channel and no separate insert. That is deliberate: there is no insert to lift, shrink back from the ends or wear through in a high-traffic stairwell.
Do I need to screw it down?
No, and you should not. The manufacturer specifies glue or tape. The profile is flexible by design, and screwing through it works against that — it puckers the band between fixings and creates the trip edge you were trying to remove.
Can I fit it over carpet?
Yes. The manufacturer states it suits carpet, tile, panel or a finished stair of any thickness, and that it will refurbish old PVC-profiled steps without disassembly. Make sure the covering itself is firmly stuck down at the nose first, or you are bonding to something that is already moving.
What slip rating does it have?
None is published for this line. The manufacturer describes the grooved section as providing anti-slip and fall protection but publishes no pendulum test value or R rating, and we will not put a figure on it we cannot source. If your specification needs a tested figure, ask us and we will request it or suggest a rated alternative.
