Description
On a wide tread, a single 38mm strip of grip near the front does not cover where people actually put their feet. This 91mm x 32mm profile carries two anti-slip inserts instead of one, spread across the tread so the grip continues back from the nose rather than stopping an inch behind it. It is a heavy duty 5mm gauge section for contract carpet, and like the rest of this range it carries a green photoluminescent strip on the leading edge that charges from the building's lighting and glows on its own once that light is removed.
Why it works
Two channels, not one
The extra insert is the reason to choose this profile over a narrower one. A 91mm tread plate gives room for two runs of anti-slip PVC — the manufacturer's twin-channel arrangement takes two 38mm x 3.4mm standard inserts side by side, split by a slim bare-metal rib. That suits a deep step edge, a stair that takes heavy two-way traffic, or a specification where the grip needs to extend under the whole footfall rather than just the nose. It also doubles the colour area, so the step edge reads more strongly from above.
The glow strip is chemistry, not electronics
The manufacturer identifies the photoluminescent element as europium-doped strontium aluminate, emitting green at a peak wavelength of 520nm, with afterglow brightness of 455 mcd/m² ten minutes after excitation, a highly visible afterglow lasting more than 600 minutes, and a total afterglow duration of more than 3,000 minutes before it decays to 0.32 mcd/m². It recharges whenever the stair is lit and cannot fail in a power cut. For the inserts themselves the manufacturer states a DIN 51130:2010 ramp classification of R11 at 22.9° corrected, and BS 7976-2:2002 pendulum values of PTV 66 dry and PTV 54 wet — both well clear of the 36 PTV mark the UK Slip Resistance Group associates with low slip potential. The channel is extruded from 6063 aluminium to BS EN 573-3:2003.
Where it is used
Wide commercial flights where the tread is deep and the traffic is heavy: transport interchanges, shopping centres, large office atria, hospital and university circulation stairs, and stadium or venue steps. The 5mm gauge takes heavy duty contract carpet, and the wide plate protects a generous slice of the step edge from chipping.
This is an internal specification. The manufacturer's own selection guide marks the standard PVC insert used in this twin-channel profile as not suitable for external use; only its Tredsafe insert carries an external rating. For covered or exposed outdoor steps, ask us for the Tredsafe version rather than fitting this one.

Choosing the right option
Length first: 2.46m, 2.77m and 3.22m are the manufacturer's stock extrusion lengths, while 1.0m, 1.5m and 2.0m are cut from the same profile for shorter flights. Measure the full tread width, order the next length up and cut back on site.
Then colour. Contrast guidance is expressed as a difference in Light Reflectance Value between the step edge and the surrounding floor, and the manufacturer publishes an LRV for every insert in the range — all eleven are in the table above. Both channels take the same colour. Against a dark carpet, White at 79.9 or Yellow at 55.7 give the widest separation; against a pale floor, Black at 4.5 or Brown at 9.1 do the same in reverse. Work the difference out against your own floor rather than choosing on appearance.
Installation, use and care
Check the step is dry, clean, level and free of debris. Mark and drill your fixing positions and plug the step. Bed the nosing on a suitable adhesive, set it onto the step, then screw down and fit both inserts or insert pips over the screw heads. A wide profile like this wants fixings at closer centres than a narrow one — do not rely on adhesive alone across a 91mm plate.
Clean the inserts with a neutral detergent and rinse with clean water, drying before traffic returns. The aluminium can be brought back with steel wool or a cloth. Do not use solvent cleaners on either part.
Frequently asked questions
Does this take an LED strip?
No. There is no lighting channel and no electrical component of any kind. The glowing edge is a photoluminescent strip that stores ambient light and re-emits it once the room goes dark.
Can I fit this on outdoor steps?
Not as supplied. The manufacturer's selection guide rates the standard PVC insert in this twin-channel profile for internal use only — its Tredsafe insert is the externally rated one. Get in touch if your steps are outside and we will quote the Tredsafe version instead.
Can I have two different insert colours?
Not as listed. Both channels are supplied in the colour you select. If you need a two-tone arrangement, contact us before ordering and we will check what the manufacturer can do.
Why choose a double channel over a single?
Depth of grip. On a wide tread a single insert leaves most of the plate as bare metal; two inserts carry the anti-slip surface further back under the foot and make the step edge read more strongly from above.
Will it fit a stair with a sloping riser?
Not flush. This is a straight-edge profile with a vertical back leg. On a raked riser, choose one of our raked-back profiles instead.
Ordering and delivery
Each length is supplied as a single cut piece — order one per step and allow a little extra on the width for trimming. All eleven insert colours are available in all six lengths, and UK delivery is one flat rate whatever the order size. If you need a length we do not list, or an anodised finish, get in touch before ordering.
