Description

The 56mm-riser square-edge stair nosing in dark and mirror finishes

This is the same 70mm x 56mm square-edge profile as our standard listing — a 3.5mm-gauge aluminium nosing from the manufacturer's DDA range with a full 56mm face down the riser — in the four finishes specified when the stair has to look as considered as it is safe: Dark Bronze, Satin Black, Mirroflect Silver and Mirrorflect Gold. It fits square-nosed steps, ramps down at the back under vinyl, LVT, wood, lino or lightweight carpet, and its single channel takes one wide replaceable anti-slip PVC insert in 19 colours. The Mill Finish, Bright Polished, Satin Gold and Satin Bronze versions are on the companion listing.

Why it works

A dark finish turns the riser face into the contrast band

On a single-channel nosing the insert supplies the contrast on the going and the metal face has to supply it on the riser. Approved Document K asks, for buildings other than dwellings, for a visually contrasting material at least 55mm wide on both the tread and the riser (clause 1.7a). This face is 56mm, and in Dark Bronze or Satin Black it sits far from a pale vinyl or stone step in light reflectance value, so the riser band works as hard as the tread band. Pair a dark face with a pale insert such as White (LRV 73.69) or Oyster (58.10) and both surfaces of the step announce the edge.

Mirror finishes need a considered pairing

Mirroflect Silver and Mirrorflect Gold are chosen for their look, and a reflective face borrows the colour of whatever is around it. On a mirror finish let the insert carry the contrast and choose it at least 30 points of LRV from the floor, the threshold Approved Document M sets for adjacent surfaces (20 points where lighting exceeds 200 lux). The manufacturer publishes an LRV for all 19 inserts, from Premium Black at 4.48 to White at 73.69.

Slip performance, stated by the manufacturer

The manufacturer's safety documentation pack reports a BS 7976-2 pendulum test (Floor Safe Ltd, report FS10174, linished stair tread sample): 70 PTV dry, 58 PTV wet, both low slip potential. We carry those figures as the manufacturer states them; we have not tested the profile ourselves.

✓ Building Regulations — what this profile gives you

The manufacturer marks this profile Building Regulations compliant on its own drawing and lists it in its DDA range. It rests on a 56mm riser face and a 70mm tread plate, both above the 55mm minimum in Approved Document K 1.7a, plus a published LRV for every insert. Compliance belongs to the installed stair: the insert and finish still have to contrast with your floor, and Building Control signs it off.

Where it's used

Hotel and hospitality stairs, bar mezzanines, corporate receptions, retail flagships, theatres, galleries, listed-building refurbishments where a mill finish would jar against brass or bronze ironmongery, and higher-specification apartment common parts. It suits square-edged steps with a hard or resilient floor finish; other step shapes need the matching profile.

Choosing the right option

Decide which surface carries the contrast. With Dark Bronze or Satin Black the face does most of the riser work, so choose a pale insert against a dark floor or a dark insert against a pale one and check the LRV gap is over 30. With Mirroflect Silver or Mirrorflect Gold, treat the metal as neutral and put the whole contrast into the insert. Hazard, the black and yellow band, flags a step as a hazard in its own right and on this range costs the same as the plain colours.

Dark Bronze and Satin Black are priced identically; Mirroflect Silver is the next step up and Mirrorflect Gold the dearest finish in the range. Measure the going and take the next stock length up; all three lengths cut down on site.

Installation, use and care

Fix to a clean, sound, dry substrate: drilled and screwed through the tread plate into plugs, or bonded with a construction adhesive where drilling is not wanted. Lay the floor covering up to and over the ramped rear edge. Cut with a fine-tooth blade and de-burr the ends; protect a mirror face with low-tack tape while cutting and fixing. Clean with warm water, a neutral detergent and a soft cloth; abrasives, solvents, bleach and acidic cleaners will mark these finishes.

Frequently asked questions

Is a mirror finish a problem for contrast?

Not if the insert is chosen for it. A reflective face takes on the colour of its surroundings, so put the contrast in the insert and confirm the LRV gap to the floor covering is over 30 points. On a dark finish the face itself contrasts with a pale step.

Why are Dark Bronze and Satin Black the same price?

The manufacturer prices them on one trade rate and we carry that through; the mirror finishes sit on higher rates.
