If you are finishing a tiled or natural stone staircase and the step edges have to survive years of footfall, this profile does two jobs at once. It caps the vulnerable front edge of every tread in brushed 304-grade stainless steel, and carries a factory-bonded anti-slip band along the walking line. Specifiers reach for it where a slip classification has to be evidenced on drawings; tilers and shopfitters like it because the perforated leg beds straight into the tile adhesive, so the edge is mechanically anchored rather than stuck on after the event. You choose the tread by traffic level, the height by your tile or stone thickness, and the length by the width of the flight.

Why it works

The metal takes the wear, not the tile

A ceramic or stone tread edge is the first part of a staircase to fail. Trolleys, heels and dropped tools chip it, and once one corner has gone the damage spreads along the arris. Wrapping that edge in stainless steel moves the point of wear onto a material that shrugs it off, and keeps the tile you paid for intact underneath.

A slip rating you can put on a drawing

R10 and R11 are DIN 51130 ramp-test classifications, not marketing terms. The R11 tread is a mineral grain tape with a coarse, aggressive grip, suited to buildings where the floor gets wet and traffic is constant. The R10 tread is a textured plastic tape with a finer profile — enough security underfoot for a house or a quiet office, and far less obtrusive to look at. Both are bonded at manufacture, so there is nothing to align on site.

Anchored into the bed, not stuck on top

The rear leg is punched with anchor holes and sits in the adhesive bed beneath the tile, so the bond is mechanical as well as chemical. That is what separates this from a strip screwed on after the floor is finished, and it lets the tread band sit flush with the tile face rather than standing proud as a trip hazard of its own.

Where it is used

Office stair cores, hotel and restaurant staircases, retail steps, schools, healthcare corridors, apartment blocks and communal entrance stairs. In housing it is usually specified on tiled hallway steps, split-level landings and stone stairs where carpet is not wanted. It is an internal profile — see the limitations below before considering it outdoors.

Choosing the right option

Height comes first, and it is not a preference. The profile height must match the thickness of your tile or stone plus its adhesive bed, so the tread sits flush with the finished floor. Measure the actual covering before ordering — a 9 mm profile under a 12 mm tile leaves a lip.

Then the tread. Take R11 for anything public, commercial or likely to get wet. R10 is the residential and low-traffic choice, and the quieter finish of the two.

Then the colour. Black gives a strong visual break at the step edge. Transparent all but disappears into the steel — choose it for looks, not for visibility.

Then the length. Order the next length up from your flight width and cut to fit. Profiles can be butted on wide stairs, but a single run per step looks better.

Installation, use and care

Fit as part of the tiling, not after it. Comb adhesive onto the substrate, press the perforated leg firmly into the bed, then lay the tile up to the profile leaving a normal grout joint at the junction. Cut to length with a fine-tooth hacksaw or a mitre saw and a metal-cutting blade, and deburr the cut end. Afterwards the profile needs no special maintenance. Brush the tread regularly so grit does not clog the grain — that is what preserves the slip performance. Clean the steel with a mild household cleaner; avoid anything containing hydrochloric or hydrofluoric acid, and keep abrasive pads off the brushed finish.

Common questions

Can this be retrofitted to a finished staircase?
No. The anchoring leg has to go into the adhesive bed, so it is fitted while the stairs are being tiled. For an existing floor you need a surface-mounted or overlap profile instead.

Does it satisfy Approved Document K or BS 8300 for visual contrast?
Contrast is a project-level assessment against your actual tread finish, and we cannot make that call for you. The black tread gives usable contrast against most pale tiles and stone; the transparent tread does not, and should not be relied on where a contrasting nosing is required.

Can I use it outside?
It is specified for internal use. No external performance data is published for this line, and this grade is not intended for continuous exposure to weather or de-icing salt.

What if my tile is thicker than 15 mm?
This profile does not go above 15 mm. Send us your tile thickness and we will tell you whether another profile in the range covers it.
