Concealed Fix Stair Nosing 65x55mm Square Aluminium, 1m & 2m

Most stair nosings announce themselves: a band of coloured plastic, a row of screw heads down the tread. This one does not. The 65mm tread is milled into fine flutes that carry the grip, the fixings go through a rebate at the back, and a 13mm PVC strip clips over them so the finished step reads as a clean run of metal. It is the profile to specify when an architect wants the stair edge protected and slip-resistant without a stripe across every tread — reception stairs, gallery and museum flights, hotel and showroom stairs, and refurbishment work where the existing treads are sound and only the edge needs rescuing.

Why it works

Hidden fixings. Screws land in the rear channel, not in the middle of the walking surface, and the cover strip conceals them. Nothing sits proud to catch a mop or a heel, and there is no row of countersunk heads collecting dirt down the length of the flight.

Grip milled into the metal. The fluting runs the full width of the tread. Because it is machined into the extrusion rather than added as an insert, there is nothing to peel, shrink or work loose, and it cannot be levered out by a trolley wheel. It also means the surface wears at the same rate as the rest of the nosing.

A deep 55mm riser. The square riser leg covers 55mm down the face of the step — enough to hide a chipped or patched arris completely, and the depth specifiers reach for when the step edge needs to be visible from above on the descent.

Where it's used

Offices, hotels, galleries, showrooms and education buildings — anywhere the stair is on show. It suits stone, terrazzo, timber and hard flooring, and takes a ramp extension or carpet nap detail at the back where the tread is finished in something softer.

Choosing the right option

Start with the finish, because on this profile the metal is most of what you see. Mill is the plain extrusion and the most economical. Satin is the evenly matted anodised finish that hides scuffing best and is the usual choice for public stairs. Polished is the brightest and suits reception and retail. Black anodised reads as a dark line and is the one to use against dark stone or where the stair should recede.

Then the cover strip. It is a 13mm detail, so it is a design decision rather than a safety one: match it to the metal and it disappears, or run yellow if the flight needs a visible edge for a risk assessment. Castellated is lightly ribbed, smooth textured is flat and matt — at this width the difference is felt underfoot only at the very back of the tread. If the specification calls for a wide contrasting band instead, a nosing with a full-width insert is the better profile.

Check the riser first: this is the square version, for a plumb riser face. Where the riser slopes back under the tread, order the raked back version instead.

Installation, use and care

Fix to a clean, sound, level substrate. Drill and plug into concrete, or screw direct into timber, working through the rear channel; bed on a flexible adhesive as well where the step is uneven. Press the cover strip in from one end once the bar is fixed — it can be lifted later with a thin blade if a fixing needs to come out. Cut with a fine-tooth blade and deburr the ends. Clean with warm water and a neutral detergent. Avoid abrasive pads on anodised and polished finishes, and do not use solvent cleaners on the PVC strip.

Questions

Where do the screws actually go? Into the narrow channel at the back of the tread, which the 13mm strip then covers, so the walking surface stays unbroken.

Is the fluted metal grippy enough on its own? It is the standard specification for internal stairs in dry conditions. For wet or external steps, choose a profile with an anti-slip insert or a gritted infill.

Can the strip be changed later? Yes — it lifts out and pushes back in, so the colour can be changed without disturbing the nosing.
