An 84mm double-channel bullnose stair nosing with two gritted exterior-grip inserts side by side: the profile to specify when a rounded step gets wet, gets busy, or both. Entrance steps, escape stairs and the first steps inside a door all take water from shoes; this nosing protects the leading edge and turns it into a wide, gripping, high-contrast band. The curved 37mm leg wraps the rounded nose of the step. Seven finishes, three insert colours and three stock lengths cut on site, for commercial and residential stairs, inside and out.
A single-channel bullnose nosing such as our 55mm profile carries one insert. This profile carries two, separated by a thin aluminium rib, so the gritted surface runs almost the full 84mm depth of the tread. That is where the foot lands coming down, so the double channel puts more slip-resistant area exactly where slips start. It is one of the most versatile and widely specified profiles for busy stairs.
The exterior-grip inserts are not soft PVC. Each one is a gel-coated GRP strip with fused alumina or quartz grit bedded in at the wet stage, so the grit is part of the insert rather than a coating on top. The manufacturer states TRL pendulum values above 95 dry and above 85 wet; the UK Slip Resistance Group treats 36 and over as low slip potential. The inserts are formulated for wet, cold and UV-exposed conditions, keep their grip and dimensional stability outside, and are rated General Purpose (GP) grade for fire.
The 3.5mm aluminium wall follows a rounded step edge instead of bridging it, so there is no hollow for a heel to crack. The profile is rigid enough to resist deformation under heavy foot traffic and trolley loads, and light enough for one person to fit.

Insert colour is a safety decision first. Approved Document M treats a difference of more than 30 LRV points between adjacent surfaces as adequate visual contrast. On dark or mid-tone treads choose Brimstone (LRV 54.24) or Everest (58.00); on pale stone or light floors choose Coal (5.09). The 84mm gritted band is well beyond the 55mm minimum contrasting strip on the tread that Approved Document K asks for, and the 37mm curved face sits within the 30 to 55mm riser band given for common stairs in blocks of flats.
Finish: Mill for hard-working external stairs; Satin Black and the bronzes for modern facades; Satin Gold and Mirrorflect for receptions. Length: choose the stock length that covers your widest step.
Need a square edge? See the 85 x 32mm square twin exterior-grip nosing. For narrower bullnose steps, use the 55 x 37mm single-insert version.
Make good broken edges with repair mortar; clean and dry the step. Push the nosing hard against the step and mark through the pre-drilled holes. Drill and plug, with screws suited to the substrate (concrete, timber or steel), corrosion-resistant outside. Apply cartridge adhesive, screw down firmly and fit the insert plugs over the screws; adhesive alone is not recommended. Cut with a mitre saw or hacksaw, from one end only. Wash with mild detergent; no polishes, solvents, steam cleaners or power washers.
