The GRP (Glass Reinforced Plastic) Anti-Slip Stair Nosing is the UK's most specified heavy-duty step nosing for commercial, industrial, and public sector staircases. With a coarse, gritty GRP surface that delivers R13 slip resistance — the highest grip rating achievable — these nosings dramatically reduce the risk of slips and falls on stairs in all weather conditions.

How Many Do I Need?
Measure the widest tread on the flight, not a typical one — winders and half-landings are usually wider than the straight run, and a nosing cut short is a trip hazard rather than a fix. Order one length per step, plus one spare for mis-cuts. Longer lengths work out cheaper per metre and can be cut down, so on a wide staircase it is often cheaper to buy 3m and cut than to buy two shorter pieces.

Worked example: a domestic flight of 13 treads at 850mm needs 13 × 1m lengths, or 5 × 3m cut down (15 pieces, two spare) — the second option is usually the cheaper of the two.

Installation Instructions
- Surface preparation — clean the step edge thoroughly; remove all grease, dust, old adhesive and loose material. Patch repair any damaged areas. Surface must be dry.
- Dry fit — lay the nosing in position before applying any adhesive to confirm fit and positioning.
- Cut to length — use a jigsaw with a tungsten carbide blade or angle grinder with diamond disc. Work in a ventilated area and wear PPE (dust mask, eye protection).
- Apply adhesive — run a 6mm bead of FlexyFix adhesive 25mm from each edge and in a zigzag pattern across the centre at 200mm intervals.
- Mechanical fixing (recommended for high traffic) — drill fixing holes 70mm from front edge and 60mm from back edge, spaced every 600mm. Use stainless steel fixings.
- Press firmly — seat the nosing into position, pressing along the full length. Apply additional pressure with a rubber roller if available.
- Seal screw holes — apply a small bead of sealant into each fixing hole for a watertight finish.
- Cure time — allow adhesive to fully cure per manufacturer guidance before opening to foot traffic.

GRP stair nosings are virtually maintenance-free. In outdoor settings, rainfall naturally self-cleans the gritty surface. For indoor use, occasional brushing or a mild detergent wash with a stiff brush restores appearance. Do not use alkaline-based cleaners or solvents. Damaged sections can be replaced individually without disrupting adjacent nosings.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I fit these to existing steps, or only new ones?
Both. The profile is designed to retrofit straight onto existing concrete, stone, timber or steel steps as well as new builds. The step edge needs to be sound and reasonably square — patch repair any spalled or crumbling nosings first, or the profile will bridge the gap instead of bedding down.
Do I need adhesive as well as screws?
Not always. Adhesive alone suits light domestic traffic on a clean, dry, level edge. Screws alone suit timber and steel. For public buildings, external steps and anything carrying trolleys or heavy footfall, use both — the adhesive stops water tracking underneath and the screws carry the load.
How do I cut it to length?
A jigsaw with a tungsten carbide blade, or an angle grinder with a diamond disc. GRP dust is abrasive and irritant, so cut outdoors or with extraction and wear a mask, goggles and gloves. Cut slightly long and offer the piece up before final trimming.
Which colour should I choose?
Match the contrast to the step, not to your taste. Yellow reads strongest against dark or grey concrete and is the usual choice for schools, hospitals and public buildings. Black suits pale stone and low-key commercial entrances. Black and yellow hazard stripe is the industrial convention for factories, warehouses and plant access.
Will it survive a British winter outdoors?
Yes. GRP does not rust, rot or absorb water, so frost, road salt and standing water do not degrade it the way they attack steel or timber. The gritted surface works wet as well as dry, which is the point of specifying it on external steps in the first place.
Can I replace just one damaged nosing later?
Yes. Each step is a separate piece, so a single damaged length can be lifted and replaced without disturbing the ones either side. Keep a spare length from the original order — colours can vary slightly between production batches.
