Description

This is the heavyweight end of the aluminium stair nosing range: a 90mm tread plate on a 39mm bullnose riser, extruded in a 5mm gauge so it beds down over medium weight carpet without standing proud of the covering. Two PVC insert channels run the full length of the plate, split by a bare metal rib — that is what gives you both the grip and the two-tone step-edge definition a busy commercial flight needs. Six anodised metal finishes and nineteen insert colours, in 2.44m stock bars.

Why it works

The 5mm gauge is a carpet allowance, not a thickness boast

A 5mm gauge sounds like a durability figure, and it is, but on this profile it is really about fit. The manufacturer specifies it for medium weight carpet and heavy duty smooth flooring: the plate sits over the covering and still presents a flush leading edge, instead of forcing you to trim the carpet back to bare tread. On a refurbishment where the covering stays down, that is the whole job.

Two channels, and a reason to use two colours

The double channel is not just more grip. Because a bare metal rib separates the two bands, you can run contrasting inserts — dark against light, or hazard against a neutral — and get a step edge that reads from the top of a flight. The manufacturer publishes a light reflectance value for almost every insert colour, so contrast can be specified as a number: from Premium Black at 4.48 to White at 73.69. They also give the rule to apply it with — a minimum of 30 LRV points between adjacent surfaces. Put a 4.48 band against a 42.00 one and you have cleared that by a distance; pair two mid-tones and you have not.

The slip figure, and exactly what it applies to

The manufacturer's safety pack carries a pendulum test to BS 7976-2 (Floor Safe Ltd, report FS10174, September 2015, Four-S slider): 70 PTV dry and 58 PTV wet, both low slip potential. Read the small print with it — the sample is described as "Stair Tread — Linished", which is the metal surface, not a named insert colour, so treat it as a figure for the profile rather than a per-colour insert rating. No DIN 51130 R value and no fire rating are published for the standard PVC insert.

Where it's used

Internal commercial and public stairs: office and civic stairwells, schools and colleges, retail and leisure floors, hotels, shared-access cores, and refurbishment work where a worn stair edge is renewed without lifting the covering.

Choosing the right option

Check the step edge first. This profile is bullnose — it suits a stair whose front edge is rounded. On a square-edged or rake-back step it will not sit flush.

Then pick the finish for the setting: Mill Finish is the plain, lowest-cost option, it disappears into most schemes, and it is the one held as standard stock. Bright Polished and the golds are architectural choices for foyers and hotels; Satin Black and Dark Bronze sit quietly in darker interiors. Finish and length drive the price here; insert colour does not, with Hazard the single exception. The premium finishes are made to order, so talk to us before you commit to one on a deadline.

For the inserts, work to the manufacturer's 30-point LRV rule: check the figure for your tread covering, then pick an insert at least 30 points away from it. Order the length above your widest step and cut down on site.

Installation, use and care

Bars are screwed and/or bonded to a sound, dry, level tread. Pre-drill and plug into concrete or screed, apply adhesive to the underside, and fix down before pressing the inserts home so the insert covers the fixing head. Cut with a fine-tooth blade suited to aluminium and deburr before fitting. The manufacturer publishes its own installation and maintenance sheets, worth following on a specified job. Clean inserts with a neutral detergent and let them dry before the stair takes traffic.

Frequently asked questions

Is 39mm the tread or the riser?

39mm is the riser — the depth of the metal down the front face of the step. The tread plate, the part you walk on, is 90mm. Some listings for this profile quote the 39mm as a tread width; that is wrong, and two insert channels plus the rib between them could not fit across 39mm.

Can I use it outside?

No. The manufacturer specifies this profile for internal use with medium weight carpet and heavy duty smooth flooring, and publishes no external or wet-area rating for the standard PVC insert. For external steps you need a purpose-made exterior insert profile.

Which floor coverings does it suit?

Medium weight carpet and heavy duty smooth flooring such as commercial vinyl, as specified by the manufacturer. We do not claim laminate or timber for it, because the manufacturer does not.

Are the premium finishes stock items?

No. Only Mill Finish is held as standard stock. The manufacturer states that its premium anodised finishes — Bright Polished, Satin Gold, Dark Bronze, Satin Black and Mirrorflect Gold — are available on request, subject to minimum order quantities, with a lead time normally of 7 to 10 working days. Contact us before ordering one so we can confirm quantity and lead time.

Does the price change with insert colour?

Only for Hazard. Every other insert colour costs the same, so price is set by the metal finish and the length. Hazard is the one exception — the manufacturer surcharges it per channel, and because this is a double-channel profile that surcharge applies twice. It is already built into the Hazard prices shown above, so what you see is what you pay.

Ordering and delivery

Choose finish, insert colour and length above, and order one bar per step — count the steps rather than measuring the run. The same profile is also stocked as a 2.75m bar. If you need a different finish or an insert colour not listed here, contact us and we will check availability with the manufacturer before you commit.

Took a punt on this aluminium stair nosing because I needed something durable for high traffic areas. The delivery was quick and the packaging kept everything secure, which was surprisingly better than anticipated. Arrived in excellent shape with no dings or problems, so it went onto the marble without fuss and looks the part in our hotel lobby.

Got this for a set of beachside restaurant steps to add some polish and protection. The brushed finish on the stair nosing effortlessly blends with outdoor elements, creating an aesthetic enhancement thats more impressive up close. Despite exposure to sea breeze and foot traffic, it holds its sleek appearance admirably.

Surprisingly robust nosing. Cutting this thing to length was straightforward with a decent saw, and it fit my warehouse steps snugly over the carpet. The stair nosing grips nicely as more forklifts started getting parked close by—they’ve really stood up well in our heavy traffic zone. Id absolutely get more for other areas in the building.
