This heavyweight bullnose nosing is for stairs that take real foot traffic and are covered in medium-weight carpet or heavy-duty smooth flooring. The deep, rounded 57mm riser leg wraps the step edge in a single curve, and the 58mm tread leg carries a full-width slip-resistant insert where feet land.

It comes in a 3.22m (3220mm) stock length. The longest length suits wide treads and landing edges, where it saves joints, and it cuts efficiently into several standard step widths.

Why this profile works

A bullnose that follows the step

Many timber and concrete stairs already have a rounded front edge. A bullnose profile follows that shape instead of forcing a square corner onto it, so it beds down fully without a gap behind the curve. The rounded face also takes knocks from trolleys, cases and heels better, and a curved edge is kinder to shins than a sharp corner.

A 5mm gauge for thicker coverings

The gauge is the depth your floorcovering meets behind the nosing. At 5mm it matches medium-weight carpet and heavy-duty sheet or safety flooring, so the covering finishes flush with the profile. For thin vinyl or lino, choose a 3.5mm gauge profile, otherwise you will get a step-up at the back edge.

Heavyweight extrusion with a replaceable insert

This profile is from the heavyweight range, with a thicker aluminium section than domestic nosings, meant for corridors, stairwells and circulation stairs used all day. Grip comes from the PVC insert in its single channel. When the insert wears, you replace the strip and leave the fixed aluminium in place.

Where it's used

Office and hotel stairwells, schools and colleges, healthcare corridors, retail and leisure stairs, and communal stairs in apartment blocks. It is especially suited to carpeted commercial stairs, where the bullnose front and a contrasting insert give a clear, durable edge that lasts much longer than carpet turned over the nosing.

Choosing the right option

Finish. Mill Finish is plain, untreated aluminium and the most economical choice for back-of-house and service stairs. Bright Polished gives a reflective silver edge. Satin Gold, Dark Bronze and Satin Black are colour finishes that suit wood, stone-effect and dark contemporary floors. Mirrorflect Gold is a mirror-bright gold for feature and front-of-house stairs, and it costs the most.

Insert colour. Choose it against the floorcovering. For a visible step edge, pick an insert that is clearly lighter or darker than the floor. For a low-key look, match the tone of the floor. Hazard is a black-and-yellow warning insert and is priced higher than the plain colours because it is a premium insert.

Length. The 3.22m length is one of three stocked lengths (2.44m and 2.75m are the others). Pick the one that cuts into your step widths with the least waste.

Installation, use & care

Measure each step and cut the profile with a fine-toothed metal saw or a mitre saw fitted with a non-ferrous blade, then de-burr the ends. Dry-fit the nosing tight to the step edge with the riser leg down the face. Fix it by screwing through the tread leg with fixings suited to the substrate (plugs into concrete, wood screws into timber), bedding it on a suitable adhesive for a solid, rattle-free fit. Lay the floorcovering up to the back of the profile, then press the insert fully into its channel. Clean with a damp cloth and neutral detergent. Avoid abrasive pads on polished and coloured finishes.

Which floorcoverings does the 5mm gauge suit?

Medium-weight carpet and heavy-duty smooth flooring such as commercial sheet vinyl or safety flooring. Thin vinyl, lino or lightweight carpet would sit below the back of the profile, so choose a 3.5mm gauge nosing for those.

Does this nosing meet Building Regulations (Part M / Part K)?

Compliance depends on the whole installation, not just the nosing: the insert must contrast visually with the surrounding floor, and building control or your specifier makes the final decision. The manufacturer lists this profile in its heavyweight range, not its DDA range. If a DDA-range nosing is specified, choose one from that range.

Square or bullnose, which should I pick?

Match the shape of the step. Bullnose suits stairs that already have a rounded front edge and gives a softer, more traditional look. Square-edged profiles suit sharp-cornered concrete or timber steps and a more architectural finish.

How many steps will one 3.22m length cover?

Divide 3220mm by your finished step width, allowing a few millimetres per cut. The 3.22m length is useful for wide stairs and landings. It is also stocked in 2.44m and 2.75m lengths if they cut with less waste.
