What is a Heavy Duty Carpet Stair Nosing?

A carpet stair nosing is an aluminium profile that sits over the top of the carpet at the front edge (nose) of a stair tread. Unlike nosings designed for hard floors, carpet stair nosings have a rounded profile that sits comfortably over the carpet pile, protecting the carpet edge from wear and fraying at the step nose β€” the highest-wear point on a carpeted staircase. The anti-slip PVC insert provides grip at the step edge, complementing the carpet's own traction.

This heavy duty version features a thick aluminium body engineered to handle demanding foot traffic in both domestic and commercial environments, including care homes, offices, schools, hotels, and rental properties.

Key Features and Benefits

  • Specifically designed for carpet β€” the rounded profile sits over the carpet pile without crushing it flat, maintaining the carpet's appearance while protecting its edge.
  • Prevents carpet fraying β€” the most common cause of carpet stair damage is fraying at the step nose under foot traffic. This nosing covers and protects that vulnerable edge.
  • Heavy duty aluminium construction β€” thicker than standard nosings, built to handle sustained commercial foot traffic without bending or deforming.
  • Permanently bonded PVC anti-slip insert β€” cannot work loose or peel, providing consistent grip at the step nose.
  • Retrofit installation β€” fits directly over the existing carpet. No need to remove, refit, or damage the carpet.
  • 9 insert colours β€” match or contrast with your carpet colour, or choose high-visibility Red/Yellow for safety compliance.

Where to Use Carpet Stair Nosings

  • Domestic carpeted staircases β€” homes and rental properties
  • Care homes and assisted living facilities with carpeted stairs
  • Hotel and hospitality carpeted staircases
  • Office buildings with commercial carpet tile stairs
  • Schools and educational facilities with carpet-covered stairs
  • Healthcare facilities and hospitals
  • Any carpeted staircase where the carpet edge is fraying, worn, or a slip risk

⚠️ Note: This nosing sits on top of the carpet. It is not designed for hard floor stairs (tile, laminate, vinyl) β€” for those, see our ramp profile or bullnose anti-slip nosing range. For carpet-to-hard-floor transitions at doorways, see our Z-profile carpet threshold strip.

How to Install a Carpet Stair Nosing

  1. Measure the stair width and select the appropriate length.
  2. Cut to exact size if needed using a metal saw or angle grinder. File edges smooth.
  3. Position the nosing over the carpet at the front edge of the stair tread, with the anti-slip insert facing upward.
  4. Mark fixing positions through the pre-drilled holes onto the carpet and stair board below.
  5. Drill through the carpet into the stair board below and insert the supplied fixings.
  6. Screw down firmly β€” the nosing will compress the carpet slightly at the fixing points. This is normal.
  7. Repeat for each step.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does this damage the carpet when installed?

The nosing is screwed through the carpet into the stair board below. The screws create small holes in the carpet pile β€” these are typically hidden beneath the nosing body. The carpet compression under the nosing is normal and does not cause lasting damage to the carpet structure.

What thickness of carpet can this be used with?

This nosing is suitable for standard residential and commercial carpet thicknesses. For very thick, deep-pile carpet (over 15mm pile height), the nosing may not sit flush β€” in these cases, contact us to discuss the most appropriate profile.

Can this be used with carpet tiles?

Yes. This nosing is suitable for both traditional carpet and commercial carpet tiles, making it a common choice for office and commercial building staircase upgrades.

Is the anti-slip insert permanent?

Yes. The PVC insert is permanently bonded during manufacture β€” it cannot be removed, replaced, or worked loose.

What insert colour matches grey carpet?

Grey is the most obvious choice and the most popular option for grey carpets. Black also works well as a contrast colour on grey. Both provide clear step edge definition.

Can this be used outdoors?

Anodised aluminium is corrosion-resistant. If using on covered external carpeted steps, ensure appropriate fixings and that the carpet itself is suitable for the environment.

How many nosings do I need?

One per stair tread. Count the steps and order one nosing per step. For a standard domestic staircase (860mm wide), the 1000mm length is most commonly ordered.
