Bare concrete or stone steps turn genuinely dangerous the moment rain, snow or mud gets onto them, and a doormat that skids underfoot only adds to the risk. This heavy-duty rubber stair tread mat drops straight onto the step and gives you a grip surface on both sides, so it stays put even when the tread beneath it is wet.

Why it works

The mat is moulded from a thick, flexible rubber compound into an open ring pattern that runs through both the top and underside of the mat. That open structure does two jobs at once: on the top face it breaks up standing water and traps grit so a boot sole finds grip rather than a slick film of rain, and on the underside the same texture bites into the step surface to resist sliding when someone puts their full weight on the front edge — the point where most stair slips actually happen. At 12mm thick it has enough body to stay flat under repeated footfall without curling at the edges, and being solid rubber rather than a coir or bristle mat, it does not rot, mould or lose its shape when it is left outside through a British winter.

This tread mat is specified on external house and shop entrance steps, hotel and restaurant front steps that see heavy footfall in all weather, and internal stairs in workshops, back-of-house areas and stores where dirt and moisture are tracked in from outside. It also works well as a heavy-duty entrance mat immediately inside or outside a doorway.

Choosing the right option

This mat is supplied in a single 30 x 90cm size, sized for a standard domestic or light commercial step tread. Measure the depth (front to back) and width of the step before ordering — the mat should sit fully on the tread without a section overhanging the nosing, since an overhanging edge becomes its own trip hazard. For a wider commercial step, two mats can be laid side by side; for a run of several steps, order one mat per tread.

Installation, use & care

No fixings are needed — the mat is loose-laid directly onto a clean, reasonably flat step, and its weight and grippy underside hold it in place under normal foot traffic. Lift and hose down or brush off periodically to clear trapped grit and leaves from the open pattern, particularly on external steps in autumn. Being solid rubber, it can be left outside permanently without special care.

FAQ

Will it slide around on a smooth step? The textured underside is designed to resist sliding on typical stone, concrete and tiled steps under normal use; very smooth polished surfaces may benefit from a non-slip underlay.

Can it be cut to fit a narrower step? The mat is supplied as a fixed 30 x 90cm size and is not designed to be cut.

Is it suitable for icy conditions? The open pattern helps break up surface water before it freezes, but no mat removes the need for normal winter care on genuinely icy steps.

Does it fade in sunlight? The black rubber is UV-stable for outdoor use and will not need replacing due to fading under normal exposure.
