Description

Covering a 3.22 metre stair flight in one piece means no joint landing in the middle of the tread, where feet actually fall. This is the Morleys HN1 profile: a square-edge aluminium stair nosing with a single anti-slip insert channel, a 62mm tread plate and a 32mm riser, extruded from 6000-series aluminium alloy at a 5mm gauge. It sits in Morleys' Heavyweight range rather than the standard range: the section for medium-weight carpet and heavy-duty smooth flooring on stairs that will carry real traffic for years, not for a domestic flight.

Why it works

The 5mm gauge is the whole point

Gauge is the number that separates this profile from the standard square nosings. At 5mm the tread plate and the riser leg are roughly 40% thicker than the 3.5mm sections specified for vinyl, lino and lightweight carpet. That extra metal is what stops the nose deflecting under trolley wheels, wheeled bins and sustained footfall, and what keeps the insert channel from opening up along its length. Morleys states the profile material as aluminium alloy, 6000-series, in the safety data sheet issued with its stair nosing documentation pack.

The insert does the gripping, and it has been measured

The 62mm tread plate carries one continuous PVC insert along the full length of the section, set back behind the square nose. Morleys publishes a BS 7976-2 pendulum test carried out by Floor Safe Ltd (test FS10174, 11 September 2015, 4S slider, sample recorded as "Stair Tread – Linished") returning a pendulum test value of 70 dry and 58 wet. On the HSE and UK Slip Resistance Group scale reproduced on that report — 0–24 high slip potential, 25–35 moderate, 36 and above low — both readings sit in the low band. Those are the manufacturer's published figures, carried across from its Stairnosings Safety Documentation Pack; they are not our own test results, and the report itself recommends re-testing in situ.

Contrast is the other half of the safety case

A nosing that grips but cannot be seen only solves half the problem. Morleys publishes a Light Reflectance Value for every insert colour and cites the Equality Act 2010 access-statement duty, advising a minimum 30-point LRV difference between adjacent surfaces. The 15 insert colours here span LRV 4.48 to 73.69, so almost any tread finish can be paired with an insert that clears that gap.

Where it's used

Schools and further-education buildings, hospital and care corridors, office stairwells laid with carpet tile, hospitality back-of-house stairs, apartment and student-accommodation common stairs, and refurbishment work bringing a worn step edge back up to standard. Anywhere the stair is wide, the traffic is constant, and a thin domestic-gauge trim would need replacing inside a couple of years.

The LRV figures below are Morleys' published values, taken from its Insert LRV Data Sheet (rev. January 2022) and the insert colour chart on the HN1 product page. Use the LRV calculator to check the difference against your tread finish.

Choosing the right option

Start with the length. This listing is the 3.22m bar; the same profile is stocked in 2.44m and 2.75m, so pick whichever cuts your step width with the least offcut.

Then the insert, because that is the safety decision. Read the LRV of your tread covering and choose an insert at least 30 points away from it — Premium Black or Dark Blue against a pale carpet, White, Yellow or Sahara against a dark one. Hazard is the yellow-and-black diagonal used where a step edge has to be conspicuous whatever surrounds it.

The finish is the last choice and the only cosmetic one. Mill Finish is the untreated extrusion and the lowest-cost option, common in plant rooms and back stairs; Bright Polished, Satin Gold, Satin Black, Dark Bronze and Mirrorflect Gold are anodised or coated for front-of-house work.

Morleys makes more of this profile than we stock on this page. Three further finishes — Satin Silver, Satin Bronze and Mirroflect Silver — and four further insert colours — Polar Grey (LRV 42.00), Blue (9.76), Mid Brown (21.02) and Oyster (58.10) — are listed by the manufacturer but are not held here. Installation, use and care

Morleys' own installation guide sets out the sequence: make good any irregularity in the step with repair mortar, clean and dry the substrate, offer the nosing up and mark through the pre-drilled holes with the profile pushed hard against the riser, drill and plug for concrete or stone, apply cartridge adhesive to the underside, reposition, screw down firmly, then fit the insert plug to conceal the screw head. Cut to length with a fine-tooth blade and de-burr the ends. In service, vacuum the insert and clean with a neutral-pH floor cleaner; abrasive pads will dull an anodised finish.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between HN1 and the standard square nosings?

Gauge and tread width. HN1 is a 5mm section with a 62mm tread from Morleys' Heavyweight range, specified for medium-weight carpet and heavy-duty smooth flooring. The standard-range square profiles are 3.5mm and intended for vinyl, lino and lightweight carpet.

Is this nosing suitable for outdoor steps?

Morleys lists HN1 with a PVC insert and does not publish an exterior rating for it. Its exterior-graded inserts are a separate GRP range fitted to other profiles, so for external stairs ask us for the exterior option rather than specifying this one.

Are fixings included?

Not published for this line, and we do not supply them with the profile. The installation guide assumes screws, plugs and cartridge adhesive appropriate to your substrate, sourced separately.

Can I get a colour sample before ordering?

Yes, and Morleys recommends it: its own colour chart carries a note that on-screen colours are for guidance only and that a physical sample should be requested for an exact match. Ask us and we will arrange one.

Can the 3.22m bar be cut down on site?

Yes. It is supplied as a stock length for cutting to the step width, which is how most flights are fitted — one bar will usually yield more than one step on a narrower stair.

Ordering and delivery

Each variant is one 3.22 metre bar in the finish and insert colour you select, and the price shown is for that exact combination. If you need a finish or colour not listed, a quantity for a whole building, or a confirmed delivery date before you order, contact us for lead time and price.
