PVC Stair Nosing 65x36mm Slimline Anti Slip Glow Edge, 11 Colours

A 65mm x 36mm slimline step edge with an extruded PVC body rather than an aluminium one. That makes it lighter to handle, quieter and warmer underfoot, and easier to cut on site — useful on a domestic stair or a refurbishment where you are working room by room. It carries a coloured PVC anti-slip insert in a single channel, and a green photoluminescent strip along the leading edge that charges from the building's ordinary lighting and glows on its own once that light is removed. There is no wiring, no driver and no LED in it.

Why it works

The glow strip is chemistry, not electronics

The manufacturer identifies the photoluminescent element as europium-doped strontium aluminate, emitting green at a peak wavelength of 520nm, with afterglow brightness of 455 mcd/m² ten minutes after excitation and a highly visible afterglow lasting more than 600 minutes. Because it stores and re-emits ambient light, it recharges every time the stair is lit and cannot fail in a power cut. The supplier puts it plainly: it illuminates the step during power failures, with no electrical connection.

The insert does the gripping

The anti-slip insert is a flexible PVC extrusion with a three-dimensional pyramid surface and a polyurethane coating that reduces dirt retention. The manufacturer states a DIN 51130:2010 ramp classification of R11 at 22.9° corrected, and BS 7976-2:2002 pendulum values of PTV 66 dry and PTV 54 wet — both well clear of the 36 PTV mark the UK Slip Resistance Group associates with low slip potential. The insert resists UV, oil, grease, petrol, salt, dilute acids and alkalis; organic solvents will soften it.

PVC body, and what that means

A PVC profile will not dent the way soft aluminium can and it will not corrode, but it is less rigid than metal and less suited to very heavy commercial traffic or to a stair where trolleys and cages cross the nosing all day. For those, choose one of our aluminium-bodied profiles. For domestic stairs, offices, shops and lighter commercial work, the PVC body does the job at a lower weight.

Choosing the right option

Four lengths on this profile — there is no 2.46m or 2.77m. Measure the full tread width, take the next available length up and cut back on site; a PVC body cuts cleanly with a fine-tooth saw.

Insert colour is the safety decision rather than a decorative one. Contrast guidance is expressed as a difference in Light Reflectance Value between the step edge and the floor around it, and the manufacturer publishes an LRV for every one of the eleven inserts — they are in the table above. Against a dark floor, White at 79.9 or Yellow at 55.7 open the widest gap; against a pale floor, Black at 4.5 or Brown at 9.1 do the same in reverse. Work the difference out against your own covering before ordering.

Installation, use and care

Check the step is dry, clean, level and free of debris. Mark and drill your fixing positions and plug the step. Bed the nosing on a suitable adhesive, set it onto the step, then screw down and fit the insert or insert pip over the screw heads. Do not over-tighten — a PVC body will dimple around a countersink if you drive the screws too hard.

Clean with a neutral detergent and rinse with clean water, drying before traffic returns. Do not use solvent cleaners: organic solvents attack both the insert and the PVC body.

Frequently asked questions

Does this take an LED strip?

No. There is no lighting channel and no electrical component. The glowing edge is a photoluminescent strip that charges from ambient light and re-emits it in the dark.

Is the body PVC or aluminium?

PVC. The supplier lists the material for this profile as PVC, and it is the lighter, warmer, lower-cost alternative to our aluminium-bodied nosings. If you need metal for a heavy commercial stair, choose one of those instead.

Do you still offer saffron and tangerine?

No. Those two shades appear in the manufacturer's colour chart but are not produced as stock items for this profile, and we have removed them rather than take orders we cannot fill. The eleven colours listed are the ones actually available, and every one has a published LRV.

Can I use it outside?

Not as specified. The manufacturer publishes no external rating for this insert. The same profile is offered with an externally rated insert — choose that version for exposed steps.

Ordering and delivery

Each length is supplied as a single cut piece — order one per step and allow a little extra on the width for trimming. All eleven insert colours are available in all four lengths, and UK delivery is one flat rate whatever the order size.
