Description
Photoluminescent Anti-Slip Aluminium Stair Nosing
When the power fails or smoke fills a stairwell, a photoluminescent stair nosing keeps every step edge visible without a single volt of electricity. This heavy-duty aluminium ramp-profile nosing pairs a black carbide anti-slip insert with an integral glow strip that charges under normal daylight or room lighting and glows for hours in the dark, so fire escapes, external steps and emergency exit routes stay safely walkable the moment the lights go out. The 5mm heavy-duty gauge profile is built for constant outdoor exposure and heavy foot traffic, and is supplied in 20 lengths from 800mm to 2750mm to suit everything from a single domestic step to a full commercial stair run.
Why it works
The nosing's photoluminescent strip contains a pigment that absorbs ambient light energy throughout the day and re-emits it as a visible glow once the surrounding light level drops, with no batteries, wiring or maintenance required. Sitting alongside it, a coarse carbide grit insert bonded into the aluminium profile gives slip resistance in both light and dark conditions, so the nosing is doing two safety jobs at once: defining the step edge visually, and keeping feet from sliding off it. The aluminium carrier itself is a heavy-duty 5mm gauge extrusion, chosen so the profile survives the repeated flexing and weather exposure of an external fire escape rather than just an indoor corridor.
- Works without power – photoluminescent strip glows for hours after charging in daylight or room light, no electrics needed
- Emergency egress ready – keeps step edges visible during power failures, smoke events and night-time evacuations
- Anti-slip in the dark and light – carbide grit insert provides grip regardless of visibility conditions
- Built for outdoor exposure – 5mm heavy-duty aluminium gauge withstands external fire escapes and weather
- 20 lengths available – 800mm to 2750mm covers single domestic steps through to full commercial stair runs
Where it's used
This nosing is specified on fire escapes, external emergency exit stairs, industrial stairwells, car park stair cores and any step where mains or emergency lighting cannot be relied on in a power cut. It also suits refurbishment projects on schools, offices and public buildings where photoluminescent way-guidance is being added to meet fire risk assessment recommendations, and outdoor domestic steps in gardens or side passages where a permanently lit step edge is impractical.

Choosing the right length
Measure the full width of the step you are fitting to, not just the walked area, and order the length equal to or just over that measurement so the nosing runs edge to edge. Standard UK domestic stair widths are typically covered by the 800mm to 1000mm lengths, while communal and commercial stairs often need 1200mm to 1800mm. For wide fire escape flights or landings, the longer 2000mm to 2750mm lengths avoid an unsightly and less durable joint part-way across the step. This is a special order profile cut to the length you select, so measure twice before ordering as it cannot be shortened by the customer without cutting tools.
Installation, use and care
Fit directly to the front edge of a new or existing step over concrete, timber or most other solid substrates, using a suitable construction adhesive and mechanical fixings for external or heavy-traffic locations. Allow the glow strip a full day of normal light exposure before relying on it in the dark, as photoluminescent pigment needs to charge before it can emit light. Clean with a damp cloth and mild detergent; avoid abrasive pads over the glow strip, which can dull its light-emitting surface over time.
Frequently asked questions
How long does the glow last in the dark? After a full day of ambient light exposure, the strip typically remains visibly glowing for several hours, gradually fading as the stored light energy is released.
Can it be used outdoors? Yes. This is the external-grade version, built to a heavy-duty 5mm gauge for exposed fire escapes and outdoor steps.
Does it need an electrical supply? No. The photoluminescent strip charges passively from daylight or room lighting and needs no wiring, batteries or power connection.
Can I cut it to a shorter length myself? The profile can be cut with a fine-tooth hacksaw if needed, but we recommend ordering the closest length to avoid an unfinished cut edge on the glow strip.
