Description
This PIR motion sensor switches LED stair lighting on as someone approaches and off again once the staircase is clear. It is made for 12V natural white systems built with our natural white LED tape, and comes in two versions. The driver-powered sensor plugs straight into a port on our standard 12V LED driver, with no extra wiring. The mains-powered sensor is wired between the light switch and the driver by your electrician. Either way, nobody has to find a switch in the dark, and the lights are not left on all night. It suits homes, holiday lets, offices, hotels and communal stairwells.
Why it works
Light when it is needed
In the dark, step edges are hard to judge. A motion sensor lights every nosing the moment someone approaches the stairs, then switches off automatically once they have gone. That gives a safer staircase at night without wasting power by leaving the lights on.
Two ways to fit it
The driver-powered version is the simplest: it plugs into one of the six ports on the standard driver and needs no mains work of its own. The mains-powered version sits on the supply side of the driver, between the switch and the driver, which suits installations where the sensor and driver are planned in with the house wiring.
Switches off by itself
The driver-powered sensor turns the lights off 30 seconds after the last movement. The mains-powered sensor turns them off after 10 to 30 seconds. Both come on a 1.5m sensor lead, so the sensor head can be placed where it sees people approaching while the driver stays hidden.
- Driver powered: 3.5m detection range
- Mains powered: 2 to 5m detection range
- 1.5m sensor lead on both versions
- For 12V natural white LED tape
Where it's used
Hallways and landings in homes, where the stairs light up for night-time trips. Holiday lets and guest houses, where visitors do not know where the switches are. Communal stairwells in flats and offices. Basement and cellar stairs, and hotel corridors with lit steps.

Choosing the right option
Choose the driver-powered version if you are using our standard 12V LED driver and want a simple plug-in fit: it uses one of the driver's six ports, so allow for that when counting tape runs, or add an extra-port connector block. Choose the mains-powered version if your electrician is wiring the sensor into the supply between the switch and the driver, or if you want a longer detection range of up to 5m. Both are for natural white tape only; tunable white and RGB systems use remote or smart control instead. Place the sensor where it sees people approaching the bottom or top of the stairs, not facing a window or heater.
Installation, use and care
Plan the sensor position before tiling or decorating, and run the 1.5m sensor lead back to the driver position. The driver-powered sensor plugs into a free port on the driver. The mains-powered sensor must be installed by a qualified electrician between the switch and the driver. Keep the sensor lens clean and unobstructed, and wipe it with a dry cloth.
FAQ
Q: Will it work with tunable white or RGB tape?
A: No. Both versions are for 12V natural white systems.
Q: Which version is easier to fit?
A: The driver-powered sensor; it plugs into a port on the standard driver.
Q: How long do the lights stay on?
A: About 30 seconds after the last movement on the driver-powered version, and 10 to 30 seconds on the mains-powered version.
Q: Do I need an electrician?
A: The driver and any mains connection must be installed by a qualified electrician.
