Description

This is the natural white LED tape that lights our light-down LED tile-in stair nosing. It sits inside the profile's LED channel, behind the frosted diffuser, and washes a soft, even band of light down each riser. It is a 12V tape in 4000K natural white, built with COB (chip on board) LEDs at 120 per metre, so the light reads as one continuous line rather than a row of dots. Choose 4.8W per metre for a softer glow or 9.6W per metre for a brighter wash, in reels from 1m to 5m. Electricians, tilers and homeowners fitting a lit tiled staircase use it with our 12V LED driver and end caps.

Why it works

A continuous line of light

Traditional LED tape uses separate surface-mounted chips, which can show as bright spots through a diffuser. COB tape packs the LEDs tightly under a continuous coating, so the riser below each step is lit by a smooth, unbroken line. On a staircase, where you see every step edge at once, that evenness matters.

Natural white that suits tiles

At 4000K the light is a clean natural white: crisp enough to show the step edge clearly at night, without the cold blue cast that makes grey porcelain look clinical or the yellow cast that muddies white tiles.

Safe low-voltage, protected tape

The tape runs at 12V from a separate driver, so only extra-low voltage reaches the stairs. It is rated IP65, giving protection against dust and water jets, which suits a channel that sits close to floors that are mopped.

  • Natural white 4000K, COB LEDs, 120 per metre
  • 4.8W or 9.6W per metre
  • 12V DC, IP65
  • 1m, 2m, 3m, 4m or 5m reels

Where it's used

Tiled staircases in hallways and open-plan homes, where lit risers double as night lighting. Feature stairs in hotels, restaurants, bars and spas. Cinema and auditorium steps, where a gentle riser glow helps people find their footing without spoiling a darkened room. Single steps between floor levels, such as a raised kitchen or dining area.

Choosing the right option

Pick the output first. 4.8W per metre gives a soft, low-glare glow that suits homes and hallways and lets one driver run more tape. 9.6W per metre gives a brighter, more defined wash, better for larger stairs, commercial spaces or where the stair is lit by other lights too. Then choose the length. Each reel has its own lead that plugs into the driver, so the simplest installation is one reel per step, at least as long as the step is wide: a 1m reel for a 900mm step, a 2m reel for a 1.5m landing step, trimmed at a marked cut point. Count the steps to get the number of reels. Finally size the driver: multiply the metres of tape by the watts per metre and choose the next driver size up. For example, 5m of 9.6W tape draws 48W, so it needs a 50W driver. Keep each 12V run to 10m or less, or the far end will dim.

Installation, use and care

Fit the tape after the profile is bedded and the tiles are grouted. Clean the inside of the channel with a surface-preparation wipe and let it dry. If you need a shorter piece, peel back a little of the backing and cut only at a marked cut point with sharp scissors. Peel off the rest of the backing, press the tape into the channel, fit the diffuser and plug the lead into the driver. Leave a little space at the end so the heat-shrink sleeve sits inside the profile. All mains connections must be made by a qualified electrician.

FAQ

Q: Does the tape need a driver?
A: Yes. It runs at 12V DC, so it needs a 12V LED driver sized to the total wattage of the tape you install.

Q: Can I cut the tape to the width of each step?
A: Yes, but only at the marked cut points along the tape. Cutting anywhere else will stop that section from lighting.

Q: Which output should I choose for a home staircase?
A: 4.8W per metre suits most homes and gives a soft, comfortable glow. Choose 9.6W per metre if you want a brighter, more pronounced line of light.

Q: Can I dim this tape?
A: Yes, from a remote. Power it from the remote-ready 12V LED driver and add the natural white single-zone remote dimmer. The standard 12V driver switches on and off only.

Q: Is tunable white or colour-changing tape available?
A: Yes. Our tunable white and RGB LED tape fits the same profile. It needs the remote-ready 12V LED driver and the matching single-zone remote instead of the standard driver.

Ordering and delivery

Choose the output and reel length, then enter the number of reels. Order the driver and end caps at the same time so the whole kit arrives together by courier to UK mainland addresses. Send us your step widths and we will check the tape length and driver size before you order.
