Self Adhesive Aluminium Stair Nosing 25x20mm Anodised Edge Trim

If your stairs have laminate, vinyl, engineered wood or tile on them and the front edges are starting to chip, lift or look tired, this is the quickest way to give each step a clean, protected edge. It is a slim anodised aluminium angle, 25mm across the tread and 20mm down the front of the step, with a self-adhesive backing already applied. You cut it to the width of the step, peel the backing and press it on. There's no drilling and no screws, and no visible fixings once it's down.

It is designed for retro-fit work, going straight onto the existing step edge, so it suits a weekend refresh of a domestic staircase as well as a tidy-up of a small office, shop or rented property.

Why it works

A hard edge where the wear happens

The front edge of a step takes most of the scuffing and heel strikes on a staircase, and it is where laminate and vinyl first start to chip, split or peel back. Covering that corner with an aluminium angle moves the wear onto the metal and holds the floor covering's cut edge down, so the step keeps a crisp line for longer.

Self-adhesive, so no drilling into the step

Because the profile is bonded rather than screwed, you aren't putting holes through a finished tread or hitting a concrete step with a masonry bit. That makes it a sensible choice for stairs where drilling is awkward, where you're renting, or where you just want a clean look without screw heads.

An anodised finish in five colours

The anodised surface gives a hard-wearing, consistent colour. Gold, Silver, Champagne, Inox and Black cover most interiors. You can match the trim to the floor so it almost disappears, or pick a contrasting shade so each step edge is easy to see.

Typical jobs include laminate, engineered wood, vinyl and LVT staircases in houses and flats, tiled steps between floor levels, and single steps at a doorway. It also suits small offices, shops and rental properties that need a neat edge quickly. It is intended for residential and light commercial use.

Choosing the right option

Length: measure the width of each step. A 0.9m length covers one standard domestic step (most are 800 to 900mm wide) with a little to trim off. Choose 2.7m for wider steps, or buy one 2.7m length and cut it into three pieces for three 900mm steps, which usually works out cheaper per step. Allow a few millimetres for the saw cut.

Finish: Silver and Inox (a brushed stainless look) suit grey, white and modern floors. Gold and Champagne (a softer bronze tone) sit well with warm oak and traditional interiors. Black works with dark floors or as a bold contrast on light ones. If you want the step edges to stand out for people with poor eyesight, choose the finish that contrasts most with your floor.

Installation, use and care

The surface must be clean, dry, dust-free and flat. Wipe away grease and polish first, and don't fit it onto loose or crumbling edges. Cut the profile to length with a fine-tooth hacksaw and file off any burr. Dry-fit it, then peel the backing, position the angle tight against the step nose and press firmly along the whole length. The bond is strongest after it has been left undisturbed for a while. After that, just sweep it and wipe it with a damp cloth and mild detergent. Avoid abrasive pads, which can mark the anodised finish.
