Rake Back Aluminium Stair Nosing 85 x 32mm, Twin Mor Grip Inserts

This rake back aluminium stair nosing carries two Mor Grip inserts: a coarse gritted strip that keeps its grip when the step is wet, dusty or heavily used. The profile measures 85mm across the tread and 32mm down the riser, with a 3.5mm gauge for vinyl, lino and lightweight carpet.

Choose Obsidian (dark charcoal) or Solar (golden safety yellow), in six aluminium finishes and three stock lengths.

Why this profile works

Grit where feet land

A smooth PVC insert is fine on a dry internal stair. Once a step gets wet from spillage or brought-in rain, grip depends on texture, and that is what the Mor Grip insert adds: a hard mineral face that bites through a film of water. Two strips across the 85mm tread cover the whole landing zone of the foot. The inserts are replaceable, so a worn strip does not mean lifting the aluminium.

A riser leg that follows the rake

The 32mm riser leg leans back under the step rather than dropping vertically, so it beds down along its full depth on stairs with raked risers instead of leaving a gap behind the metal.

Six finishes, so the edge can stand out or disappear

Mill Finish is plain untreated aluminium for service stairs. Bright Polished gives a reflective silver line. Satin Gold, Dark Bronze and Satin Black suit wood, stone-effect and dark floors. Mirrorflect Gold is mirror-bright for front-of-house stairs. Pair a dark finish with Solar inserts where you want maximum contrast, or Obsidian with a matching finish for a discreet edge.

Choosing the right option

Insert colour. Obsidian for a discreet edge on grey and dark floors; Solar where the step edge must be obvious. Choose for contrast against the floorcovering, not to match it.

Finish. Mill Finish is the most economical; Bright Polished and Mirrorflect Gold are the most reflective and the most expensive; the satin and bronze finishes sit in between and hide marks best.

Length. Order the stock length that cuts into your step widths with the least waste, plus a spare where widths vary.

Installation, use & care

Cut to each step width with a fine-toothed saw for aluminium and de-burr the ends. The step must be clean, dry and sound. Fix by screwing through the tread leg with fixings suited to the substrate, bedding the profile on a suitable stair-nosing adhesive for a solid, rattle-free fit. Lay the floorcovering up to the back of the profile, then press the inserts fully home. Sweep or mop the grit face regularly, since trodden-in dirt fills the texture and reduces grip. Avoid abrasive pads on polished and coloured finishes.

What is a Mor Grip insert?

It is a hard-wearing insert faced with a coarse mineral grit instead of smooth PVC. The grit keeps its bite when the step is wet or dusty, so it suits entrances, kitchens, plant rooms and any stair that sees spillage or heavy traffic. Smooth PVC inserts are the quieter, more decorative option for dry internal stairs.

Obsidian or Solar: which should I choose?

Obsidian is dark charcoal and disappears into grey and dark floors, so the nosing reads as a slim metal line. Solar is a golden safety yellow and is the one to choose where the step edge has to be seen from a distance, or where the stair is a known trip risk. Contrast against your floorcovering is what matters.

Which floorcoverings does the 3.5mm gauge suit?

Vinyl, lino and lightweight carpet. The gauge is the depth your covering meets behind the nosing, so at 3.5mm the floor finishes flush with the back of the profile. Medium-weight or heavy carpet needs a 5mm gauge heavy duty profile instead.

How many steps will one length cover?

Each length is cut to your step widths on site. Divide the length by your step width, allowing a few millimetres per cut. Stock lengths are 2.44m, 2.75m and 3.22m: pick the one that cuts with the least waste.
