This heavy-duty rake back nosing is for commercial stairs where the step edge must be seen, protected and inspected, and where the treads are covered in medium-weight carpet or heavy-duty smooth flooring. A 62mm tread leg carries a full-width slip-resistant insert. A deep 56mm riser leg rakes back to follow the angled face of the step and puts a clear band of contrast on the front of every riser.
It comes from the DDA range, which the manufacturer classes as Building Regulations compliant. It is supplied in 2.44m (2440mm) lengths with one PVC insert, in 6 aluminium finishes and 15 insert colours.
Why this profile works
A riser leg that follows the rake
Many commercial stairs have raked risers, where the front face leans back under the tread, especially on precast concrete and older timber stairs. A square nosing leaves a gap behind its riser leg on those steps. A rake back profile angles its riser leg to match, so it beds down along its full depth and gives a solid, rattle-free edge.
Contrast on the tread and the riser
Accessibility guidance, including Approved Documents K and M and BS 8300, asks for a permanently contrasting band on both the tread and the riser, so each step edge can be picked out going up and coming down. With a 62mm tread leg and a 56mm riser leg, this profile is sized for that band. Choose a finish and insert colour that contrast clearly with your floor.
A 5mm gauge for thicker coverings
The gauge is the depth your floorcovering meets behind the nosing. At 5mm it matches medium-weight carpet and heavy-duty sheet or safety flooring, so the covering finishes flush with the profile. For thin vinyl or lino, use a 3.5mm gauge DDA profile instead, or you will be left with a step-up at the back edge.
- Rake back aluminium profile, 62mm tread x 56mm riser, 5mm gauge
- Single insert channel with a replaceable slip-resistant PVC insert
- 2.44m (2440mm) stock length, cut to step width on site
- 6 aluminium finishes x 15 insert colours
Where it's used
Office and hotel stairwells, hospitals and surgeries, schools, colleges and universities, libraries and civic buildings, shopping and leisure centres, and the common parts of residential blocks. It is especially suited to carpeted or heavy-vinyl stairs with raked risers, where building control or an access consultant will check the step edges.

Choosing the right option
Finish. Mill Finish is plain, untreated aluminium and the most economical choice for back-of-house and service stairs. Bright Polished gives a reflective silver edge. Satin Gold, Dark Bronze and Satin Black are colour finishes that suit wood, stone-effect and dark contemporary floors. Mirrorflect Gold is a mirror-bright gold for feature and front-of-house stairs, and it costs the most.
Insert colour. Choose it against the floorcovering. For a visible step edge, pick an insert that is clearly lighter or darker than the floor. For a low-key look, match the tone of the floor. Hazard is a black-and-yellow warning insert for plant rooms, loading areas and any step that needs a stronger warning.
Length. The 2.44m length is one of three stocked lengths (2.75m and 3.22m are the others). Pick the one that cuts into your step widths with the least waste.
Installation, use & care
Measure each step and cut the profile with a fine-toothed metal saw or a mitre saw fitted with a non-ferrous blade, then de-burr the ends. Dry-fit the nosing tight to the step edge with the riser leg down the face. Fix it by screwing through the tread leg with fixings suited to the substrate (plugs into concrete, wood screws into timber), bedding it on a suitable adhesive for a solid, rattle-free fit. Lay the floorcovering up to the back of the profile, then press the insert fully into its channel. Clean with a damp cloth and neutral detergent. Avoid abrasive pads on polished and coloured finishes.
Frequently asked questions
What does rake back mean?
The riser leg of the nosing is angled back rather than vertical, to follow steps whose front face leans back under the tread. On raked stairs it sits tight along its full depth. On square, vertical risers a square-edged profile is usually the better fit.
Is this nosing Building Regulations compliant?
The manufacturer classes this DDA-range profile as Building Regulations compliant, and it is sized for the contrasting tread and riser band that accessibility guidance asks for. Compliance also depends on the insert or finish contrasting with the floor, usually judged by a difference in light reflectance value (LRV), so confirm your colour choice with building control or your access consultant.
Which floorcoverings does the 5mm gauge suit?
Medium-weight carpet and heavy-duty smooth flooring such as commercial sheet vinyl or safety flooring. For thin vinyl, lino or lightweight carpet, choose a 3.5mm gauge profile so the covering finishes flush.
How many steps does a 2.44m length cover?
Divide 2440mm by your step width, allowing a few millimetres per cut. It is also stocked in 2.75m and 3.22m lengths if they cut your stair widths with less waste.
