Application & Installation Guidance

This profile is designed exclusively for internal staircases where the riser face is angled — a configuration commonly referred to as a rake back stair. The angled underside of the nosing sits flush against the riser, eliminating gaps and ensuring a clean, professional finish at the stair edge.

The double channel format accepts two PVC inserts, which are pressed into the extruded channels after the aluminium body has been fixed in position. Inserts can be cut to length using a fine-tooth saw or sharp utility knife. The profile is fixed using countersunk screws through the tread face; pilot holes should be pre-drilled to prevent the aluminium from splitting.

This nosing is suitable for use over vinyl, lino, and lightweight carpet. It is not recommended for use over thick or heavily cushioned carpet, stone, or tile without prior assessment of the substrate and fixing method.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does “rake back” mean and how do I know if my stairs require it?

A rake back profile has an angled underside that follows the slope of the riser face on certain stair constructions. If the face of your riser is angled rather than vertical, a rake back nosing is required to achieve a flush, gap-free fit. Standard (bullnose) nosings are designed for vertical risers only.

Can this nosing be cut to a shorter length on site?

Yes. Both the 2.44m and 2.75m lengths can be cut to size using a mitre saw or fine-tooth hacksaw fitted with a blade suitable for non-ferrous metals. Always deburr cut ends before installation to ensure a clean, safe finish.

Are the PVC inserts replaceable after installation?

Yes. The inserts sit within the extruded channels and can be removed and replaced without disturbing the fixed aluminium body. This makes it straightforward to refresh worn inserts or change the insert colour at a later date.

Is this profile suitable for external or wet-area staircases?

No. This profile is designed for internal use only. For external staircases or areas subject to standing water, a profile with an exterior-grade insert and appropriate drainage consideration should be selected instead.
