Description

Most buildings have two kinds of stair: the dry flights inside, and the steps that take the weather at the entrance or fire escape. This twin channel ramp back nosing covers both with one profile. The 93mm aluminium tread, straight 38mm front leg and tapered back edge stay the same. You choose the insert for each step: textured High Grip for internal stairs, or gritted Exterior Grip where rain, frost and tracked-in grit are part of daily use.

Why this nosing works

Two inserts across the full landing zone

The two inserts sit side by side over almost the whole 93mm tread, so your foot finds grip whether it lands on the arris or further back. Going down, the heel strikes the nosing first, and that depth is what stops a slip becoming a fall.

High Grip, for internal stairs

Obsidian and Solar are a textured PVC film on a PET base, about 2mm thick and self-adhesive in the channel. The manufacturer gives pendulum values of 95 dry and 60 wet, well above the 36 that counts as low slip potential.

Internal use only, rated -10°C to 80°C.

Exterior Grip, for steps that get wet

Brimstone, Coal and Everest are GRP with fused alumina or quartz grit set into the resin under a gel coat, so the grip runs through the insert, not just across its face. Published values are above 95 dry and above 85 wet, with General Purpose fire grade.

Internal and external use.

A ramped back that finishes flush

Behind the inserts the tread tapers to a fine edge. The floor covering is laid tight against it, leaving no upstand to trip on, sweep around or lift.

Contrast you can evidence

Every insert has a published LRV: Obsidian 1.80, Solar 55.10, Coal 5.09, Brimstone 54.24, Everest 58.00. Approved Document M asks for a difference of more than 30 points between nosing and tread, so one dark and one light option will clear it on almost any floor. The 93mm tread band exceeds the 55mm in Approved Document K, and the profile is classed as Building Regulations compliant.

Where it is used

Schools, offices, health buildings, hotels and flats where the main stair and the outside steps should match: High Grip inside, Exterior Grip on the entrance and escape steps, one finish throughout. For a job that is all internal or all external, the same 93 x 38mm profile is also listed with twin High Grip inserts only and with twin Exterior Grip inserts only.

Choosing the right option

Insert first, by location. Any step that is outside, under a canopy, or just inside a door where wet shoes arrive takes Exterior Grip. Dry internal flights take High Grip.

Then colour, for contrast. On pale treads use Obsidian or Coal. On dark or mid-tone floors use Solar or Brimstone, or Everest where safety yellow is too strong. Check your floor's LRV against the figures above.

Then finish. Mill Finish is the economical choice for service and escape stairs, from £139.90 for a 2.44m length with High Grip. Satin Black and the bronzes sit quietly in dark schemes. Satin Gold, Bright Polished and the Mirrorflect finishes are for stairs where the metal is meant to be seen, with Mirrorflect Gold the most expensive. Exterior Grip costs more than High Grip in every finish.

Length last. Pick the stock bar that cuts into your step widths with the least waste.

Installation, use and care

Make good damaged edges, then clean and dry the step. Cut the bar to width with a fine-tooth saw and mark the fixings with it pushed hard against the step. Bed it on cartridge adhesive (outside, this also stops water tracking underneath) and screw down with corrosion-resistant fixings. Lay the floor finish tight to the ramped back and seat the inserts. Clean with water and a neutral detergent, and brush grit out of Exterior Grip inserts. A worn insert can be replaced without lifting the aluminium.

Fixings and adhesive are not included. Tell us the substrate and we will quote suitable fixings.

Frequently asked questions

Which insert should I choose for outside steps?

Exterior Grip: Brimstone, Coal or Everest. They are gritted GRP rated for external use, with published pendulum values above 95 dry and above 85 wet. The textured High Grip inserts are for internal stairs only and should not be fitted to exposed steps.

Can I use both insert types on one project?

Yes, and that is what this listing is for. Every finish except Bright Polished is offered with both insert families, so the internal stair can take High Grip and the entrance or escape steps Exterior Grip, with the aluminium matching throughout.

How many steps will one length cover?

Allow a few millimetres per saw cut. A 2.44m bar gives two 1.2m steps, a 2.75m bar two 1.35m steps, and a 3.22m bar three 1.05m steps or two 1.6m steps.

Customer photo review of Ramp Back Twin Channel Aluminium Stair Nosing 93 x 38mm, High Grip or Exterior Grip Inserts

Picked this up for the outside steps of our community library, and Im pleased with how well it complements the stone. While making the steps safer and more defined, its weighty feel suggests itll handle plenty of foot traffic during our autumn book days without any trouble. Loving the balance between practicality and visual finish that the stair nosing brings to such a classic spot.
