This is the profile you fit when the stairs are already tiled and nobody wants them lifted. It is a slim brushed stainless steel cap that bonds straight onto the finished step: it sits on the tread, wraps over the front edge with a rounded nose, and returns a short way down the face. There is no anchoring leg and no drilling, so it goes onto a live staircase without a tiler, a skip or a week of disruption. It carries an R10 anti-slip tread set into a recess in the steel. Landlords, facilities managers and refurbishment contractors use it to fix a slip problem or a chipped step edge in an afternoon.

Why it works

It solves the problem you actually have

Most stair-safety jobs fail on disruption, not on product. Lifting and re-laying a tiled flight means closing it and matching tiles you probably cannot source any more. A bonded cap sidesteps that, and hides the chipped arris that is often the real reason the step is dangerous.

Slim enough not to become the hazard

The steel is 1.5 mm thick, so the profile raises the walking surface by roughly 2 mm at the very edge. That is low enough to be walked over without registering as a lip, provided you fit every step in the flight. Fit some and not others and you introduce a 2 mm variation in rise between steps, which is exactly the kind of inconsistency stair accidents are made of.

The tread is replaceable

The anti-slip tread sits in a machined recess rather than on the flat, so its edges are protected from being picked up by mop heads and trolley wheels. When it eventually wears, the tread is replaceable without touching the steel — which matters on a stair that will be resurfaced every few years rather than every few decades.

Where it is used

Rental properties and HMOs, student accommodation, care homes, schools, offices and hotel back-of-house — anywhere with an existing tiled flight and no appetite for taking it up. It is also the standard remedy for a stair that has failed a slip test or an insurer's inspection, because it goes in between one working day and the next. Internal use only.

Choosing the right option

Check the 17 mm return first. This is the measurement that decides whether the profile fits at all. Measure the front face of your existing step from the top of the tile downwards. If the tile edge or existing bullnose is deeper than 17 mm, the profile will not cover it and you will be left with a visible line.

Then the cover width. 34 mm suits domestic treads and keeps the change discreet. 59 mm puts more anti-slip surface under the ball of the foot and is the better choice for public and commercial flights.

Then the colour, on contrast — not on taste. Yellow and black read strongly against pale tiles and are the sensible choice where step edges must be visible. Nut brown is a compromise for stone and terracotta. Transparent gives essentially no visual contrast, so do not specify it where a contrasting nosing is required.

Installation, use and care

The bond is the whole job — there is no mechanical fixing to fall back on. Check the tiles are sound and not drummy first; a profile bonded to a loose tile is only as good as that tile. Degrease the step edge, remove any sealer or polish, and dry it fully. Apply a solvent-based bonding sealant suitable for metal onto tile in continuous beads, set the profile and hold even pressure until it grabs. Cut to length with a fine-tooth hacksaw and deburr. Afterwards, brush the tread regularly so grit does not clog it, clean the steel with a mild household cleaner, and keep acids and abrasive pads away from it.

Common questions

Will it fit over my existing step edge?
Only if the front face of the step measures 17 mm or less from the top of the tile. Measure before you order. A square, defined edge also bonds far better than a worn or heavily rounded stone bullnose.

Do I have to do every step?
Yes, every step in the flight. Fitting a few creates a 2 mm difference in rise between treated and untreated steps, which is worse than the problem you started with.

Is R10 enough for a commercial stair?
For a dry internal stair with ordinary footfall, usually. For wet, greasy or heavy-traffic areas, R11 is the appropriate rating — there is an R11 retro-fit profile in the same family, so ask us rather than over-specifying this one.

Can it go outside?
No. It is an internal profile, and no external performance data is published for this line.

Is the adhesive included?
No. Bonding sealant is bought separately and one cartridge covers several steps — tell us your step count and we will tell you how much you need.
