Fitting a nosing to a commercial flight is rarely about the staircase looking smarter — it is about the leading edge of every step staying visible, grippy and intact on the day the building is busiest. This 62 x 33mm aluminium stair nosing is a heavy-duty interior profile built for that job: a 62mm extruded tread plate carrying a full-width slip-resistant insert, and a 33mm nose that wraps down over the step edge to absorb the wear that would otherwise chip concrete or fray carpet. It is supplied in 2.77m stock lengths in a mill finish, with the insert available in black, ice grey or high-visibility yellow.
Why it works
The insert reaches the leading edge
Plenty of nosings set the insert back behind a lip of bare metal, so the first thing a descending foot meets is aluminium. This profile is designed the other way round. The manufacturer describes a mechanism that holds the insert in the channel while giving it “heightened exposure to the leading edge” — more grip sits exactly where the foot strikes, which is the point on the step where slips actually happen. The manufacturer states that this increased foot contact with the slip-resistant insert reduces the risk of slips, trips and falls on stairs designed to meet the guidance in Approved Document M and BS 8300-2:2018.
Five millimetres of aluminium, not a token strip
The carrier is extruded from 6063 aluminium at a 5mm gauge, anodised to DIN 17611 and produced to the EN 755 extrusion standard. That thickness is what lets the profile sit over a finished floor covering rather than needing to be recessed, and it is why the nose survives trolleys, ladders and site traffic instead of denting. The underside of the tread plate is keyed so adhesive grips, and the rear edge carries a small return lip that the carpet, laminate, vinyl or tile butts into for a closed joint.
Three inserts, chosen for contrast
Black reads as a clean dark line on pale stone and light carpet. Ice grey is the quiet option where the specification calls for definition without a strong visual break. Yellow is the one to pick where the step edge has to be unmistakable — plant rooms, service stairs, back-of-house routes and anywhere a risk assessment has flagged a poorly lit flight.
Where it's used
Office and apartment-block stairwells, school and college flights, hospital and clinic circulation stairs, retail and leisure back-of-house, and any interior commercial staircase where the nosing is expected to stay put for the life of the floor covering rather than be relaid with it. The manufacturer classes the profile as commercial and commercial heavy duty, and lists it for carpet, laminate, LVT and tile.

Choosing the right option
The only choice to make here is the insert colour, because the profile itself is fixed at 62mm tread by 33mm nose in a 2.77m bar. Measure the going of your step first: 62mm of tread plate wants a step deep enough that the insert sits under the ball of the foot, not out on the edge of a narrow winder. Then measure the drop of the step edge — 33mm covers a standard nose without the leg hanging proud of the riser. On colour, work from the floor covering rather than the walls: pick the insert that gives the strongest tonal step against the tread finish, which on mid-grey carpet usually means black, and on dark carpet means ice grey or yellow. If your specification sets a numerical contrast target, ask us before ordering — light reflectance figures are not published for this profile and we would rather get them from the manufacturer than guess.
Installation, use and care
The manufacturer's method is bonded and screwed, not one or the other. Make sure the steps are dry, clean, level and free of debris. If the bar is pre-drilled, use the holes to mark the drilling positions, then drill and plug the step. Apply a suitable adhesive to the underside of the nosing, set it down, and screw it home with the appropriate size of screw. The insert — or the insert pip — then covers the screw head. For cleaning, the manufacturer specifies a neutral detergent on the insert followed by a thorough rinse with clean water, and says the aluminium can be brought back with steel wool or a cloth. Solvent cleaners should never be used on it.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use this nosing outside?
We would not specify it for external steps. The manufacturer lists this profile for interior floor finishes and publishes no external-use rating for it, so for a patio, entrance step or open stairwell you want a profile the maker rates for exterior use. Ask us and we will point you at one.
What slip rating does the insert carry?
The manufacturer does not publish an R value or a pendulum test figure for this line — it describes the insert as slip-resistant and states the profile is designed for stairs meeting the guidance in Approved Document M and BS 8300-2:2018, but no numbers accompany that. If your specification needs a tested figure, tell us and we will request it from the manufacturer rather than quote one from a different range.
Will it fit over an existing floor covering?
Yes — that is what the 5mm gauge is for. The tread plate sits on top of the finished floor and the rear return lip gives the carpet, laminate, vinyl or tile a clean edge to butt into, so the nosing can be fitted to a step that is already covered.
Can I cut the 2.77m bar down?
Yes. Aluminium at this gauge cuts cleanly with a fine-tooth blade in a mitre saw or a hacksaw and a mitre box. Cut the bar rather than the insert first, deburr the cut end, then trim the insert to match.
Is a different finish available?
The bar ships in mill finish. The manufacturer states that anodised and powder-coated finishes can be made available on request, with limited anodising stock and possible lead times — contact us with the finish and quantity and we will check current availability.
Ordering and delivery
Each bar is 2.77m and is priced per piece, so work out your total run and round up to the next whole bar. Stock items are picked and despatched on a next working day service to UK mainland addresses; larger quantities and any made-to-order finish will be confirmed before your order is processed. If you are unsure how many bars a flight needs, send us the step width and the number of risers and we will do the arithmetic.
