A heavy-duty screw fix aluminium stair nosing with a 60 mm tread and 32 mm riser, fitted with a single replaceable PVC anti-slip insert. The mechanically fixed aluminium carrier is built for high-traffic internal stairs — schools, offices, retail, healthcare, student accommodation and communal blocks — where a bonded or self-adhesive nosing would not last.

Visual contrast and Building Regulations
Approved Document K and Approved Document M both require step nosings to be clearly distinguishable. BS 8300-2:2018 recommends that the nosing is made apparent by a permanently contrasting material 50–65 mm wide on the tread and 30–55 mm on the riser. At 60 mm × 32 mm this profile sits inside both bands, so the insert reads as a continuous contrast strip on the tread and down the riser rather than as a thin line.
Choosing the insert colour Contrast is what makes the nosing visible, not the colour itself. Aim for a Light Reflectance Value (LRV) at least 30 points different from the adjoining floor finish — Yellow or White against a dark carpet tile, Black or Midnight Grey against a pale vinyl. Final compliance depends on the contrast achieved on site and on correct installation.
Where it is used
- Commercial and public stairwells — offices, schools, healthcare, retail
- Communal stairs in flats, HMOs and student accommodation
- Escape routes and fire stairs, where nosing definition aids evacuation
- Refurbishment over existing concrete, timber or screeded steps
- Carpet tile stairs, where the covering butts up to the back edge of the nosing
Fitting guide
- Check the step edge is sound, clean and level. Repair any broken or crumbling nosings before fitting — the profile needs continuous support along its length.
- Measure the full width of the step and cut the nosing to suit, allowing a small clearance at each side. Order the next length up and cut down.
- Cut with a mitre saw and a fine-tooth non-ferrous blade. Deburr the cut ends.
- Dry-fit the profile so the front face sits tight against the riser and the tread section is fully bedded.
- Mark, drill and plug the substrate, then fix with countersunk screws through the tread — typically around 300 mm centres, with a fixing close to each end.
- Press the PVC insert into the channel from one end, working along the profile, and trim flush.
- When the insert eventually wears, lift one end and pull it out. The aluminium carrier and fixings stay in place, so only the insert is replaced.
Internal or external?
This version uses a PVC insert and is specified for internal stairs. PVC gives a comfortable, quiet tread underfoot and a wide colour range, but it is not the right choice for stairs exposed to weather, UV and grit.
For external steps, entrances and covered walkways, use the same 60 mm × 32 mm aluminium carrier fitted with a hard-wearing anti-slip insert instead: Screw Fit Aluminium Anti Slip Stair Nosing 60mm x 32mm for Indoor & Outdoor Steps.
Frequently asked questions
How is this stair nosing fixed?
It is a screw fix profile — mechanically fixed through the tread with countersunk screws into a drilled and plugged substrate, typically at around 300 mm centres. On a 60 mm × 32 mm commercial nosing, screw fixing is what carries the traffic load; adhesive or tape alone is not an adequate fixing on a stair and should only ever be used to supplement screws, never to replace them.
Can it be used outdoors?
Not recommended. The aluminium carrier will cope, but the PVC insert is intended for internal use — prolonged UV, frost and grit will fade and wear it prematurely. For external steps choose the Tredsafe-insert version of the same profile linked above.
Which floor finishes does it suit?
Carpet and carpet tiles, LVT and vinyl, laminate, and tile. The 32 mm riser section covers the step edge and the floor covering finishes against the back edge of the 60 mm tread section.
Can the insert be replaced without removing the nosing?
Yes. The PVC insert sits in a channel in the carrier and can be pulled out and renewed while the aluminium profile stays screwed down — useful on stairs that see heavy traffic, and far cheaper than replacing the whole nosing.
What length should I order?
Measure the full width of each step and order the next standard length up, then cut to size. Lengths available are 1.0 m, 1.5 m, 2.0 m, 2.46 m, 2.77 m and 3.22 m. For wider stairs, butt two lengths together at a joint that falls away from the main line of travel.
Can I return custom cut lengths?
Custom cut lengths are non-returnable except where the goods are faulty. Standard uncut lengths can be returned under our normal returns policy.
