Aluminium Door Threshold Cover Strip 38mm Screw Fit

Some joins should not be stuck down. A doorway that gets trolleyed through daily, a floor that has to be lifted again for access, a substrate that will not take adhesive reliably — in all of those the right answer is a cover strip you can screw into place and unscrew later. This is that strip: 38mm wide, 3.5mm at its crown, supplied centre drilled for size 6 screws so it beds down hard across the join between two floors at the same level and stays there. Eight anodised finishes, 0.900m and 2.715m lengths.

Why it works

A fixing you can undo

The strip arrives pre-drilled through its centre line. That gives you three things an adhesive strip cannot: a positive hold on a substrate that is dusty, sealed or freshly screeded; a strip that will not creep under trolley wheels in a busy doorway; and the ability to take it off again if the floor below ever has to come up. Fixings are visible in the finished installation — that is the nature of the detail. The manufacturer supplies matching screws in Bright and Designer Satin only, so in the other six finishes plan on a plain countersunk head.

Low enough to walk over without noticing

At 38mm wide the strip stands 3.5mm proud at its crown and tapers to 2.5mm at each edge, so there is no lip to catch and nothing you feel underfoot. The gentle dome sheds dirt rather than collecting it along a square shoulder, and covers a normal movement gap plus the cut edges of both floor coverings.

Finishes chosen to sit with the ironmongery

All eight finishes are anodised aluminium. That includes Brushed Brass and Brushed Stainless — they are aluminium carrying an anodised finish, not solid brass or stainless steel, which is why every finish costs the same. The manufacturer notes that anodised shades vary from batch to batch, so order a complete run at once where several strips will be seen together.

Where it is used

Doorways in schools, surgeries and offices where the floor gets trolleyed and mopped daily; access hatches and service routes where the covering has to be liftable; tile-to-vinyl joins in kitchens and clinical areas; housing and student accommodation refurbishments where the substrate is too variable to trust to tape. Anywhere the join is at one level and the fixing needs to be mechanical.

Choosing the right option

Start with the length. The 0.900m strip covers a standard internal doorway with a little to trim; the 2.715m suits a wide opening, a full room threshold or a run along a corridor, and works out cheaper per metre. Cut to length with a fine-tooth hacksaw or a mitre saw fitted with a non-ferrous blade, and ease the cut edge with a file.

Then the finish. Bright is a mirror polish and Designer Satin a softer matt — the only two finishes with matching screws, which matters on a screw-fixed profile where the heads are on show. Brushed Stainless is a muted olive-grey and Pewter a mid grey. Brushed Brass, Light Bronze and Bronze run from pale gold through khaki-gold to a deep warm brown. Onyx Black is a flat dark finish for dark floors and black door furniture. Ask us for a sample before committing to a large run: anodised finishes photograph very differently from how they read on site.

Installation, use and care

Offer the strip up dry and check it lies flat across the join with even bearing on both floors. Cut it to length and file the end. Mark through the existing centre holes, drill and plug the substrate to suit, then fix with countersunk size 6 screws; fixings are not supplied, because the right screw and plug depend entirely on whether you are going into timber, chipboard, screed or concrete. Do not overtighten — the section is thin and will dimple around the head. Clean with a damp cloth and a neutral detergent, and keep abrasives and solvents off the anodised surface. Check the screws occasionally on heavily trafficked doorways.

FAQ

Are the screws included?
No. The strip is supplied centre drilled for size 6 screws but the fixings themselves are not included, because the correct screw and plug depend on the substrate. The manufacturer offers matching screws in Bright and Designer Satin only.

Why choose this over the self-adhesive version?
Because the fixing has to be mechanical: a substrate that will not take tape, a doorway with trolley traffic, or a floor that may need lifting again. If none of those apply, the self-adhesive version is quicker and leaves no visible fixings.

Can I have it undrilled, or drilled off-centre?
Yes, the manufacturer offers both to special order. Send us the detail and we will price it.

How wide a gap will 38mm cover?
The strip is 38mm overall and bears on both floor surfaces, so you need landing on each side for the screws to bite. A gap of up to roughly 15–20mm is covered comfortably; wider joins are better served by a 70mm to 135mm cover plate.

Can it be used outside?
We would not specify it outside. The manufacturer publishes no external rating for this profile, so treat it as an internal threshold.

Ordering and delivery

UK mainland delivery is a single flat rate however many lengths you buy, so ordering the whole job at once costs no more to deliver than a single strip. The 2.715m lengths travel as a long parcel; allow for that if delivery access is tight. If you need a continuous run over 2.715m, butt two lengths under the door leaf where the joint will not be seen.
