Description

Stone, timber and thicker engineered floors leave a real step where they meet a thinner covering — 8mm or 10mm of exposed edge that catches a toe, chips at the corner and traps dirt along its length. This ramp profile takes that step out. It sits flat on the lower floor, rises across a 38mm face and finishes hard against the cut edge of the higher one, turning an abrupt lip into a gradient you can walk and wheel across. Screw fixed through the face, in seven anodised finishes, two ramp heights and two stock lengths.

Why it works

Two ramp heights, matched to the floor you are ramping off

The profile is made for an 8mm floor covering and for a 10mm one. Pick by the finished thickness of the higher covering, not by the gap between the floors. Get it wrong and the detail fails in one of two ways: too shallow and the back edge stands short of the covering, leaving the exposed edge you were trying to protect; too deep and the ramp bridges over the covering with a void beneath that will flex, rattle and eventually deform.

Built for the floors that actually create this step

The manufacturer names stone and timber floors as the typical application, and that is where the 8mm and 10mm rises earn their place — a tiled or stone floor laid on a bed, or an engineered board over underlay, against a thin vinyl or a screed. A shallower 3mm or 6mm ramp simply will not reach.

Screw fixed through the face

Supplied pre-drilled through the flat upper surface for size 6 screws, so the fixing pins the high side down and holds the back edge tight to the floor covering. Fixings are visible in the finished installation. The manufacturer offers matching screws in Bright and Designer Satin only — in the other five finishes the screw head reads as a plain fastener, which is worth knowing before you specify a dark finish for a prominent doorway.

Seven finishes, not eight

The wider Designer Home Collection runs to eight anodised finishes, but these two ramp heights are made in seven: Brushed Brass is not among them. If you need a brass tone, Light Bronze is the closest in this profile, or the shallower 3mm and 6mm ramps are made in the full eight. All the finishes here are anodised aluminium, and the manufacturer notes that anodised shades vary from batch to batch, so order a run in one go where several will be seen together.

Where it is used

Doorways where a stone or tiled floor meets vinyl or a screed; timber and engineered board against a thinner covering in refurbishment work; hotel and student rooms where floors have been replaced piecemeal over the years; offices, surgeries and shops where a hard floor meets a resilient sheet. Anywhere the step is real enough to feel but too small to justify a full access ramp.

Choosing the right option

Measure the thickness of the higher floor covering where it has been cut back at the doorway. Around 8mm — most engineered boards, thicker LVT over underlay, a thin stone tile — takes the 8mm ramp. Around 10mm, typical of a bedded ceramic or porcelain tile, takes the 10mm. If it measures 6mm or less, the shallower 3mm and 6mm ramp profile is the right one; if it is well over 10mm you need a deeper ramp than this range offers, so send us the measurement and we will find it.

Then the length. The 0.900m covers a standard internal doorway with a little to trim; the 2.715m suits double doors, a wide opening, or several doorways cut from one length, and works out cheaper per metre.

Then the finish. Bright is a mirror polish and Designer Satin a soft matt — the only two with matching screws. Brushed Stainless is a muted olive-grey, Pewter a darker grey. Light Bronze and Bronze run from a khaki-gold to a deep warm brown, and Onyx Black is flat and dark. Ask us for a sample if you are matching existing ironmongery: anodised finishes photograph very differently from how they read on site.

Installation, use and care

Offer the profile up dry and check the back edge meets the cut edge of the higher covering cleanly along its whole length — trim the covering rather than packing the profile if it does not. Cut to length with a fine-tooth hacksaw or a mitre saw with a non-ferrous blade and file the cut end. Mark through the existing holes, drill and plug the substrate to suit, and fix with countersunk size 6 screws. Fixings are not supplied, because the right screw and plug depend on whether you are going into timber, chipboard, screed or a tile bed — and on a bedded stone floor you will usually be fixing into the substrate beside the tile rather than through it. Do not overtighten; the face is thin and will dimple. Clean with a damp cloth and a neutral detergent, and keep abrasives and solvents off the anodised surface.

FAQ

How do I choose between the 8mm and the 10mm?
Measure the thickness of the higher floor covering, not the height difference between the two floors. Engineered board and thicker LVT are usually around 8mm; a bedded ceramic or porcelain tile is usually nearer 10mm. If it measures 6mm or under, use the shallower ramp profile instead.

Why is there no Brushed Brass?
The manufacturer does not make these two ramp heights in Brushed Brass — its price list and its own product photography both show seven finishes for this profile. Light Bronze is the nearest warm tone here. The shallower 3mm and 6mm ramps are available in the full eight finishes.

Are the screws included?
No. The profile is supplied pre-drilled for size 6 screws but the fixings are not included, since the correct screw and plug depend entirely on the substrate. Matching screws are only offered in Bright and Designer Satin.

Can I use it outside?
We would not specify it outside. The manufacturer publishes no external rating for this profile, so treat it as an internal threshold and use a profile rated for outdoor use on an external doorway.

Is there a stick-down version?
Yes — the same profile is made with a pre-applied adhesive tape instead of the drilled holes. That is a separate product rather than an option here; ask us and we will quote it. On a step of this size a mechanical fixing is usually the safer specification.

Ordering and delivery

Choose the finish, the length and the ramp height above; every combination is priced on its own. UK mainland delivery is a single flat rate however many you order, so doing a whole floor in one go costs no more to deliver than a single threshold. The 2.715m lengths travel as a long parcel — allow for that if access is tight. If you need a ramp height, finish or drilling pattern that is not listed, send us the detail and we will price it as a special order.

Arrived quickly in a neat package and was super simple to fit between the lino floor in our workshop and the outdoor concrete patch. The ramp really handled well when it got a bit wet; no issues even with our clumsy crew trotting over it on a daily basis. After fitting, theres been a noticeable improvement around the threshold area, giving us less hassle managing dirt tracks inside too.

Incredibly robust, this aluminium profile seamlessly bridged the height difference in our industrial workshop. It was straightforward to cut to size with a hacksaw and laid perfectly across the flooring gap. Placing it across the threshold has eliminated those nasty toe stub incidents, and its weighty presence means its not shifting anytime soon, which is just what we needed in our bustling space.

Wasnt sure at first with the typical delivery packaging on this aluminium threshold, but it turned out sound. I installed it between our hallways laminate and the bathroom tiles; it was straightforward enough to fit. Does a great job blending floors for an even transition without tripping hazards while not denting my wallet too much.
