Description

When a new floor goes down next to an existing one, the two rarely finish level. Lay 3mm vinyl against tile, or 6mm engineered board against a screed, and you are left with a small step at the join — too shallow to notice until someone catches a toe on it or a vacuum head clips the exposed edge. This ramp threshold closes that step. It sits flat on the lower floor, slopes gently up across 38mm and finishes tight against the cut edge of the higher one, so the change in level becomes a gradient instead of a lip. Screw fixed through the face, in eight anodised finishes and two ramp heights.

Why it works

The ramp height is matched to the floor, not guessed

The profile is made in two heights: one for a 3mm floor covering and one for a 6mm one. That sounds like a small distinction, but it is the whole job. Choose the 6mm profile for a 3mm floor and the ramp sits proud of the covering with a hollow underneath that will eventually crush or rattle; choose the 3mm profile for a 6mm floor and the back edge stands short, leaving exactly the exposed edge you were trying to cover. Measure the finished thickness of the higher covering and match it.

Screw fixed through the face

These are supplied pre-drilled through the flat upper surface for size 6 screws, so the fixing goes down into the substrate on the high side and holds the back edge tight against the floor covering. Fixings are visible in the finished installation. The manufacturer notes that matching screws are offered in Bright and Designer Satin only — in the other six finishes the screw head will read as a plain fastener rather than disappearing into the profile, which is worth knowing before you specify a dark finish for a prominent doorway.

An anodised finish that will sit with the door furniture

All eight finishes are anodised aluminium from the manufacturer's Designer Home Collection. Brushed Brass and Brushed Stainless are aluminium carrying an anodised finish, not solid brass or stainless steel, which is why every finish costs the same. The manufacturer notes that anodised shades vary from batch to batch, so where several thresholds will be seen together, order them in one go.

Where it is used

Doorways between a tiled kitchen or bathroom and a vinyl or laminate hallway; the join where a new floor has been laid over an old one in a refurbishment; student accommodation, hotel bedrooms and rented flats where floor coverings are replaced room by room and never quite match; offices and surgeries where a hard floor meets a thinner resilient sheet. Anywhere the levels are close but not equal, and a full ramp profile would be overkill.

Choosing the right option

Start with the ramp height. Measure the thickness of the higher floor covering where it has been cut back at the doorway — not the gap, and not the difference between the two floors. A 2–3mm vinyl, LVT or safety sheet takes the 3mm profile; a 5–6mm LVT, engineered board or thicker sheet takes the 6mm. If the covering is thicker than 6mm you need a deeper ramp than this profile offers; ask us and we will point you at the right one.

Then the length. The 0.900m covers a standard internal doorway with a little to trim; the 2.715m suits double doors, a wide opening or several doorways from one length, and works out cheaper per metre.

Then the finish. Bright is a mirror polish and Designer Satin a soft matt — these two are the only finishes with matching screws. Brushed Stainless is a muted olive-grey and Pewter a darker grey. Brushed Brass, Light Bronze and Bronze run from pale gold through khaki-gold to a deep warm brown. Onyx Black is flat and dark. If you are matching existing ironmongery, ask us for a sample first: anodised finishes photograph very differently from how they read on site.

Installation, use and care

Offer the strip up dry and check the back edge meets the cut edge of the higher covering cleanly along its whole length; trim the covering rather than packing the threshold if it does not. Cut the strip to length with a fine-tooth hacksaw or a mitre saw with a non-ferrous blade, and file the cut end. Mark through the existing holes, drill and plug the substrate to suit, and fix with countersunk size 6 screws — these are not supplied, because the right screw depends on whether you are going into timber, chipboard or screed. Do not overtighten: the face is thin and will dimple. Clean with a damp cloth and a neutral detergent, and keep abrasives and solvents off the anodised surface.

FAQ

How do I know whether I need the 3mm or the 6mm?
Measure the thickness of the higher floor covering, not the height difference between the two floors. Vinyl and thin LVT are usually 2–3mm; thicker LVT, engineered board and cushioned sheet are usually 4–6mm. If it measures over 6mm this profile is not deep enough.

Are the screws included?
No. The strip is supplied pre-drilled for size 6 screws but the fixings are not included, since the correct screw and plug depend entirely on the substrate. Matching screws are only offered in Bright and Designer Satin.

Can I use it outside?
We would not specify it outside. The manufacturer publishes no external rating for this profile, so treat it as an internal threshold. For an external doorway use a profile the maker rates for outdoor use.

Is there a version I can stick down instead?
Yes — the same profile is made with a pre-applied adhesive tape instead of the drilled holes. That is a separate product rather than an option on this page; ask us and we will quote it.

Is the Brushed Brass finish solid brass?
No. It is aluminium with a brushed brass anodised finish, which is why it costs the same as the silver finishes. It gives the warm tone without the weight or the price of solid brass, but it will not patinate the way real brass does.

Ordering and delivery

Choose the finish, the length and the ramp height above; every combination is priced on its own. UK mainland delivery is a single flat rate however many you order, so doing the whole flat or the whole floor in one go costs no more to deliver than a single threshold. The 2.715m lengths travel as a long parcel — allow for that if access is tight. If you need a ramp height, finish or drilling pattern that is not listed, send us the detail and we will price it as a special order.

Installed it under the double doors leading from our kitchen to the patio. The subtle rise smoothed out the tiny step we barely noticed before and it easily screwed down without any hassle. Surprisingly helpful. Installing this aluminium threshold strip between the rugged concrete and polished wood was a breeze once it was cut to just the right length. A bit of faffing around, but well worth avoiding stubbed toes in the office mix-up. Would definitely consider grabbing another if needed elsewhere.
