Description

A cut carpet edge left against a tiled or stone floor will fray, and no amount of trimming stops it. This solid brass square edge trim is the detail that does: a 13mm upstand that the carpet tucks into, with punched gripper teeth in the base that bite into the backing and hold it there. The result is a clean, deliberate line where carpet meets hard floor, with the raw edge completely enclosed and nothing for a vacuum head or a heel to pick at. Screw fixed to the sub-floor, in six solid brass finishes and two stock lengths.

Why it works

The gripper is the point

The base of the profile carries punched gripper teeth. You stretch the carpet in, press it down onto the spikes and they hold it under tension against the upstand — the same principle as a gripper rod, built into the trim itself. That is what separates this from a plain cover strip laid over the top of a carpet edge: the carpet cannot creep back out of it, so the line stays tight and the edge stays enclosed.

Square edge, because the other floor is hard

The manufacturer specifies this profile for carpet meeting stone and ceramic floors. Against a tile or a stone slab there is no give, so a square upstand reads as a deliberate architectural line rather than a compromise. At 13mm wide with a 9mm upstand it stands just proud of a normal carpet pile, so the carpet finishes level with the top of the trim rather than being crushed under it.

Solid brass, and it behaves like solid brass

These are solid brass extrusions, not brass-anodised aluminium. That buys you weight, a genuine metal edge that will not wear through, and a finish that can be re-polished. It also means the brass will age: the manufacturer is explicit that brass naturally oxidises in any environment, and that moisture and chemical agents accelerate it. They recommend wearing cotton gloves when handling the profiles so fingerprints do not start that process during installation.

Two of the finishes are hand-applied

Antique Brass and Antique Bronze are produced by a chemically applied, hand-finished process deliberately intended to create an aged, unpolished effect. The manufacturer notes these vary from batch to batch. That variation is the character of the finish rather than a fault, but it does mean you should order a whole job in one go if several lengths will be seen together.

Where it is used

The line where a carpeted room meets a tiled hallway or a stone entrance; carpet tiles finishing against a ceramic floor in an office or reception; the edge of a carpeted zone in a hotel, restaurant or showroom where the junction is on show; refurbishment work where a new carpet is being fitted up to an existing hard floor. It suits specification-led work in particular — solid brass is a considered choice, and it reads that way at the threshold.

Choosing the right option

Start with the finish, because on a brass trim it is the whole decision. Polished Brass is a mirror gold and the brightest of the six; Satin Brass is the same tone with the shine taken off, and is the easier of the two to live with on a floor that gets walked on. Antique Brass and Antique Bronze are the hand-applied aged finishes — Antique Brass a warm darkened gold, Antique Bronze browner and deeper. Chrome is a bright cool silver and Satin Chrome the brushed version, both plated onto the same brass section, which is why they cost more than the brass finishes.

Then the length. The 0.900m suits a standard doorway or a short run; the 2.715m is for a room-width junction or several doorways cut from one length, and works out cheaper per metre. The manufacturer offers the two lengths specifically to reduce offcut waste, so measure the run before choosing rather than defaulting to the long one.

Installation, use and care

Set the trim out on the hard floor side first and check the line is straight along its full length. Fix it mechanically to the sub-floor — fixings are not supplied, because the right screw and plug depend entirely on whether you are going into timber, screed or concrete, and on a tiled floor you will usually be fixing into the substrate beside the tile rather than through it. Cut to length with a fine-tooth hacksaw and file the cut end. Fit the carpet last: trim it slightly oversize, tuck the edge into the upstand and press it firmly onto the gripper teeth so it is held under tension.

Handle the profiles with cotton gloves, as the manufacturer recommends, and keep them dry before fitting. In service, dust and buff with a soft dry cloth. Do not use abrasives or chemical cleaners on brass: they will strip a polished finish and will take the aged effect straight off an antique one. Polished and satin brass can be brought back with a proprietary brass polish; the antique finishes should be left alone.

FAQ

Does it hold the carpet on its own, or do I still need gripper rod?
The base has punched gripper teeth that hold the carpet edge at the trim, which is what keeps the edge tight and stops it fraying. It is doing the job of the gripper at that junction. Fixing the rest of the carpet across the room is a separate matter and unchanged.

Are the fixings included?
No. The manufacturer supplies these profiles for mechanical fixing to the sub-floor but does not include fixings, because the correct screw and plug depend on the substrate.

Will the brass tarnish?
Yes, and the manufacturer says so plainly: brass naturally oxidises in any environment, and moisture and chemical agents speed it up. Polished and satin brass can be re-polished. The two antique finishes are already an aged effect, so they change far less visibly.

Why do Chrome and Satin Chrome cost more?
They are the same solid brass section with a chrome plating applied over it, so there is an extra process in the manufacture. The price difference is the manufacturer's, carried straight through.

Will the two antique finishes match if I order more later?
Not exactly. The manufacturer states that Antique Brass and Antique Bronze are chemically applied and hand-finished with a variance from batch to batch. Order everything you need for a job at the same time if the lengths will be seen together.

Ordering and delivery

Choose the finish and length above; every combination is priced on its own, and the brass finishes cost less than the chrome-plated ones. UK mainland delivery is a single flat rate however many lengths you order, so doing a whole job at once costs no more to deliver than one piece. The 2.715m lengths travel as a long parcel, so allow for that if access is tight. Ask us for a sample before committing to a large run — brass finishes, and the antique ones especially, photograph very differently from how they read on site.
