Self Adhesive PVC Stair Nosing 40mm x 25mm, Grey, Silver or Black

Not every stair needs a commercial nosing bolted to it. On a domestic flight, a flat in a block, or a shallow run of steps in a shop, the problem is usually smaller: the front edge of the tread is chipping, the covering is starting to lift at the nose, and there is nothing to mark where one step ends and the next begins. This profile answers that. It is a flexible PVC angle, 40mm across the tread and 25mm down the riser, with a ribbed top face and a self-adhesive strip on the back. You cut it with a knife and press it on. Three colours, three lengths, no fixings and no drilling.

Why it works

Flexible, with shape memory

The PVC is formulated to bend and then return to its original form. That matters twice over: it lets the profile take up a nose that is slightly rounded or out of true instead of rocking on it, and it means a knock from a vacuum cleaner or a suitcase deforms the edge for a moment rather than cracking it. A rigid trim in the same position would split at the corner.

The ribs do the gripping and shed the dirt

The tread face is corrugated along its whole length rather than carrying a separate insert. There is nothing to work loose, nothing to replace, and the grooves give the sole something to bite on at the point of highest slip risk. The rib profile also lets grit and water run into the channels instead of sitting on the surface, which is what makes it straightforward to clean.

Colour does the marking

Black reads as a deliberate dark line and suits grey and wood-effect coverings; grey disappears into concrete, vinyl and cooler schemes; silver is the lightest of the three and lifts against dark walnut or a dark carpet. Whichever you pick, the value is the same — a visible change of tone at the nose is the cheapest stair safety measure there is.

Choosing the right option

Not every colour comes in every length, so check the pairing before you count your steps. Grey is the only colour stocked in 1.1m; grey, silver and black are all stocked in 1.2m and 2.0m. Measure the finished tread width string to string. A 1.1m or 1.2m piece covers one standard domestic step of up to about 1.15m with a trim allowance, so a straight flight of thirteen steps needs thirteen pieces. A 2.0m length covers one wide commercial step, or yields two narrow ones if your tread is under a metre and you are content with a cut in the middle of the run. Count the steps, divide, and round up — the profile is cut down on site, never joined out. Allow for the plus or minus 5mm tolerance if you are working to a tight reveal.

Installation, use and care

Lay the floor covering first and let any adhesive cure. Cut the profile to length with a sharp knife or scissors — no saw, no swarf. The bond is only as good as the surface beneath it, so wipe the step edge with methylated spirit and let it dry fully; dust, polish and damp all weaken adhesion. Dry-fit first, then peel the liner from one end, align the profile to the nose and press down firmly along the whole length, working outward from the middle. Leave it 24 hours before heavy traffic. Clean with warm water and a neutral detergent; avoid solvents and abrasive pads, which dull the surface and open up the grooves.

FAQ

Will it fit over a slightly rounded or uneven step edge?
Yes. The PVC is flexible with shape memory, so it presses onto a rounded or slightly irregular nose and holds that shape, where a rigid trim would rock or leave a gap.

Is there an anti-slip insert to replace?
No. The grip comes from grooves moulded into the PVC itself, so there is nothing to wear out, work loose or go missing.

Which colours come in which lengths?
Grey is the only colour stocked in 1.1m. Grey, silver and black are all stocked in 1.2m and 2.0m. Check the pairing before counting your steps.

Is a slip resistance rating published?
No. A tested R value or pendulum figure is not published for this line, and nor is a fire classification. Where a specification demands a certified rating, choose a nosing supplied with test data.
