Description
A ridged brass nosing is the traditional detail: no insert, no separate material, just grip ribs machined into the solid brass itself. On a period staircase, a hotel or a civic building, it is the profile that looks like it belongs rather than like a safety retrofit.
Grip from the metal, not an insert
Because the ribs are cut into the brass, there is nothing to work loose, discolour at a different rate from the carrier, or need replacing halfway through the building's life. The trade-off is honest and worth stating: machined ribs give less wet grip than a carborundum or coarse PVC insert. On a dry internal stair that is usually the right trade; on a wet entrance it is not, and an insert profile is the better answer.
63mm tread, 55mm riser
The deep 55mm riser face is the distinguishing feature. It covers the front of the step generously, which suits stone and timber stairs where the arris is worn, and gives a strong horizontal line down a flight when seen from below.

Choosing the right option
Finish. Satin brushed is contemporary and forgiving of fingerprints. Antique brass reads traditional. Antique bronze is darkest and recedes.
Grip. If the stair is an entrance, is used in wet footwear, or carries a formal slip requirement, choose one of our brass profiles with a carborundum insert instead of ribs.
Length. Order the bar that covers your going in one piece, or use the cut-to-size version for anything between 250mm and 2800mm.
Installation, use and care
Brass is heavy; support long lengths while fixing. The substrate must be sound, clean and dry, and the riser flat enough for a 55mm face to bear against. Fix at roughly 250-300mm centres with brass screws. Clean with a soft cloth and warm water; avoid abrasive creams and acidic cleaners, which will strip an antique finish unevenly.
