Solid Brass Stair Nosing 59mm Slimline Profile with Infill | Cut to Size 700-2700mm

Specify this nosing when the stair edge has to survive commercial traffic and still look like part of the architecture. It is a single-channel slimline profile in solid brass, 59mm across the tread and 30mm down the nose, cut to the length of your step rather than supplied in stock bars you have to make fit. The channel takes a replaceable anti-slip insert, so the part that wears is the part you can change. Finish and insert are chosen independently, which is what lets the same profile sit comfortably in a hotel entrance hall and a school corridor.

Why it works

Solid brass, not a plated coating

The profile is extruded from solid brass, so the colour goes all the way through. A plated or anodised edge shows its substrate as soon as the surface is scuffed, and a stair edge is scuffed within weeks. Brass wears to a patina instead of a bald patch, which is why it is still specified on stairs that have to look maintained twenty years in.

The insert carries the grip, and it is replaceable

Grip on this profile comes from the insert in the channel, not from the metal. That matters commercially: when the insert polishes down under traffic, you pull it and fit a new one rather than replacing the whole nosing. The range covers ribbed castellated PVC in 22 colours, smooth textured PVC in four, a coarse aggregate Olympic Grip insert for the wettest locations, and solid brass inserts where look leads.

Cut to your step, not to a stock length

Every piece is cut to the length you specify between 700mm and 2700mm, to ±5mm. On a refurbishment where treads vary across a flight, that removes the site trimming that leaves ragged ends and short-measure steps.

Where it's used

Medium to heavy traffic interiors where the stair is on show: hotel and office reception stairs, retail, restaurants, listed and period buildings where brass is the established metal, and higher-end residential. It suits stairs finished in LVT, vinyl, linoleum and rubber, and it can be fixed directly to a bare timber or concrete tread where no covering is going down.

Choosing the right option

Take the finish first, because it is the decision you cannot reverse. Polished brass is the brightest and shows fingerprints and cleaning marks most readily. Satin brass reads softer and hides handling better, which is why it is the usual choice on stairs that get touched. Antique brass and antique bronze are darkened finishes that suit period interiors and disguise wear from the outset.

Then take the insert on the job, not the drawing. Castellated PVC is the general-purpose ribbed choice and carries the widest colour range, including strong contrast options for definition at the step edge. Smooth textured PVC is quieter underfoot. Olympic Grip is the coarse aggregate insert for entrances and anywhere water is walked in. Solid brass inserts give a continuous metal edge but carry the least grip of the four, so avoid them where the stair gets wet.

Installation, use and care

Fix to a clean, sound and level tread. Bed on a construction adhesive, or screw-fix where the substrate or the traffic demands it — pieces are supplied undrilled, so drill on site to suit your fixing centres. Seat the insert into the channel from one end and press it home. In service, clean with a damp cloth and a neutral cleaner. Do not use abrasive pads or acidic brass polish on the antique finishes; both cut through the darkening. To replace a worn insert, lift one end clear of the channel and draw the strip out — the nosing stays in place.

Can the insert be changed later?
Yes. The insert sits in a channel and is replaceable without disturbing the nosing, so a worn or dated insert can be swapped without relaying the stair.

Is it suitable for a wet entrance?
The Olympic Grip insert is the one to specify for wet areas. We cannot quote an SRV for it because the manufacturer does not publish one, so where a tested figure is required, tell us and we will source it before you commit.

Does it come drilled?
Pieces are supplied undrilled so you can set fixing centres to suit the stair. If you would rather receive them drilled, ask us and we will price it for your order.

Will it match brass ironmongery already in the building?
Often, but brass finishes vary between manufacturers and age at different rates. On a match-critical job, ask us for a sample before you order the flight.
