Description

A solid brass stair nosing with a 69.5mm tread and a 55mm bullnose front, machined from Grade H/H CZ108 brass at 5.0mm gauge. Supplied cut to your specified length between 700mm and 2700mm.

Solid brass, not brass-effect: the colour runs through the material, so it cannot wear through to silver at the leading edge the way a coated aluminium profile does. Left unlacquered it develops a patina; it is the traditional specification for period properties, members' clubs, hotels and heritage work.

Key features

  • Solid brass, Grade H/H CZ108 to BS EN 12164:2016
  • 69.5mm tread with 55mm bullnose front
  • 5.0mm gauge
  • Cut to size, 700mm to 2700mm (tolerance ±5mm)
  • Four finishes and a choice of infill
  • Optional hidden-fix drilling

Choosing your infill

The Colour option sets the infill that sits in the channel, and it changes how the nosing performs underfoot:

  • PVC inserts — castellated and smooth textured, in 26 colours. These carry the slip resistance, and they are replaceable once the pattern wears flat, without lifting the brass.
  • Solid brass infill — Antique Brass, Antique Bronze, Polished Brass or Satin Brass. A continuous brass surface with no contrasting insert, for a uniform look. This is the higher-priced option, and it offers less grip than a PVC insert, particularly when wet.

For an entrance stair, an external step, or anywhere that gets wet underfoot, specify a PVC insert rather than a brass infill.

Compliance — read before specifying

This profile is dimensioned for accessible stair work, but compliance depends on the stair it is fitted to, not on the product alone.

  • Approved Document M describes a 55mm × 55mm contrasting band on tread and riser for buildings other than dwellings. The 55mm bullnose front meets that dimension on the riser face.
  • BS 8300-2:2018, referenced by Part M rather than being law itself, recommends at least 30 points of Light Reflectance Value difference between the nosing and the tread. Brass is a dark finish — the Antique Bronze measures LRV 9.15 — so it will only clear 30 points against a tread of roughly LRV 39 or lighter. Against a dark timber or stone tread it will not.
  • Approved Document K covers stair geometry, including a maximum nosing projection of 25mm over the tread below.

Check your combination with our LRV contrast calculator before ordering, or see the building regulations guide for what actually applies. LRV figures for the other three finishes are available on request.

Installation

Supplied cut to length — enter your dimension in the Length (mm) field before adding to the basket. Choose Drilled Hidden Fix if you want the profile pre-drilled.

Brass is dense and hard, so pre-drill and countersink properly; it does not forgive an over-driven screw the way aluminium does. Use brass or stainless fixings — plated steel corrodes against brass and stains the profile. Fitted with mechanical fixings, with adhesive as a supplement where appropriate. See the step-by-step installation guide.
