Description

Solid brass is specified for one of two reasons: the building demands it, or the stair does. This 83mm x 40mm ramped profile answers both. It is a heavy section of solid brass with a carborundum grit insert set into the tread face, for entrances, hotel and civic stairs, and refurbishment work in listed buildings where an aluminium nosing would look wrong and a soft insert would not last.

Why solid brass

Brass is dense, it takes a genuine architectural finish, and it does not dent under trolley wheels the way a thin-walled aluminium extrusion can. It also ages rather than degrades: an antique finish deepens with handling instead of scuffing back to a different colour underneath. On a stair that will be photographed, that matters.

Why the carborundum insert

Aluminium oxide grit in a resin matrix is the hardest of the common anti-slip infills. It does not burnish smooth under footfall the way a ribbed PVC insert does, and it cannot peel like a bonded tape. Pairing it with a brass carrier gives a nosing where neither the metal nor the grip is the weak point.

The ramped profile

The rear edge ramps down onto the tread surface rather than finishing square, so the nosing can be fitted over an existing floor covering without leaving a lip to catch. That makes it a refurbishment profile above all.

Choosing the right option

Finish. Satin brushed is the contemporary choice and the most forgiving of fingerprints. Antique brass is warmer and reads traditional. Antique bronze is the darkest and works where the nosing should recede rather than announce itself.

Length. Order the bar that covers your going in one piece. If your treads are an awkward width, if every flight differs, or if you need the 2.75 m length, order from the cut-to-size version of this profile, cut to the millimetre between 250mm and 2750mm.

Installation, use and care

Brass is heavy; support long lengths while fixing. The substrate must be sound, clean and dry. Fix at roughly 250-300mm centres and use brass screws so the heads match the nosing. Clean with a soft cloth and warm water. Do not use abrasive creams or acidic cleaners: an antique finish is a surface treatment and will polish off unevenly.
