Description
A flat plate insert is the detail to specify when a stair tread needs a hard, permanent line rather than a grit band. This is plain stainless steel bar, bedded into a routed groove so the top face finishes flush with the stone, terrazzo or concrete around it, supplied in ready-cut 1m, 1.5m and 2m lengths in three bar sizes.
Why stainless rather than aluminium
It stays bright
Aluminium dulls and can pit in a wet or salted environment. Stainless holds its finish, which matters when the insert is a visible architectural line in an entrance, a swimming pool surround, a food-production area or an external flight exposed to winter salt.
It takes heavier wear
Stainless is considerably harder than aluminium, so the exposed face resists scuffing from trolley wheels and cleaning machinery. On a stair that is scrubbed daily, that is the difference between a line that still looks deliberate in ten years and one that looks worn.
What it does, and what it does not
A single bar is not an anti-slip insert; its top face is smooth. It gives a crisp permanent visual line and a durable edge. Set several bars in parallel and the ribbed profile delivers real grip underfoot, which is the traditional detail on stone stairs.
Choosing a bar size
5mm square is the slimmest and takes the shallowest groove, for thin stone or limited routing depth. 10mm x 3mm gives a wider visible line with a shallow groove. 12mm x 5mm is the heavy section for stairs under real working traffic.

Installation, use and care
Rout the groove slightly deeper than the bar so adhesive can key beneath it, and set the insert back at least 15mm from the front arris. The substrate must be clean, dry and free of laitance. Bed in an exterior-grade adhesive and weight until cured. Clean with a damp cloth and neutral detergent; avoid chloride-based cleaners, which will mark stainless over time.
Choosing the right option
Length. Order the bar that covers your going in one piece. If your treads are an awkward width, or every flight differs, order from the cut-to-size version of this insert and we will cut each piece to the millimetre between 250mm and 2800mm.
Material. Choose stainless where the insert must stay bright or take heavy wear; aluminium is lighter and cheaper for dry internal work.
