Part M of the Building Regulations ensures buildings are accessible to all users, including those with disabilities. Here's how stair nosings contribute to Part M compliance.
Part M and Stairs
Part M Volume 2 (buildings other than dwellings) requires stairs to be:
- Clearly visible – Users must be able to perceive step edges
- Tactile where required – Corduroy hazard warning at top of flights
- Well-lit – Minimum 100 lux on treads
- Contrasted – Nosings distinct from treads and risers
The Visual Contrast Requirement
For partially sighted users, stair edges can be difficult to perceive. Part M requires:
"The nosings of treads should incorporate a permanently contrasting material 50-65mm wide on both the tread and riser."
Our stair nosings with contrasting inserts meet this requirement. Popular combinations include:
- Silver aluminium with black insert
- Black nosing with yellow insert
- Brass effect with brown insert
Light Reflectance Values (LRV)
For effective contrast, there should be at least 30 points difference in LRV between the nosing and the stair surface. Our technical datasheets include LRV values to help you specify correctly.
Beyond Minimum Compliance
Good design goes beyond minimum requirements. Consider:
- Extending contrast to the full stair width
- Using tactile nosings for sensory feedback
- Installing photoluminescent nosings for emergency evacuation
- Choosing rounded profiles to reduce injury from falls
Equality Act Considerations
The Equality Act 2010 requires service providers to make reasonable adjustments for disabled people. Well-designed stairs with appropriate nosings demonstrate commitment to accessibility.
