What is a T-Bar Floor Threshold Strip?

A T-bar threshold strip is an aluminium transition profile shaped like the letter T in cross-section. The lower stem of the T clips into a track that is fixed to the subfloor, while the flat top rail bridges the two floor surfaces on either side. This design allows for easy installation, adjustment, and even removal if the floor needs lifting, making T-bar profiles the preferred choice for floating floor installations such as laminate, LVT, and vinyl click flooring. This 26mm wide anodised aluminium T-bar is suitable for same-height floor transitions (and up to 2mm height difference) across tiles, stone, parquet, laminate, and vinyl.

Key Features and Benefits

  • Slim 26mm profile β€” narrow T-bar sits discreetly between floors, virtually invisible once installed.
  • Track and clip system β€” the track is fixed first, then the T-bar clips in. Allows the top profile to be removed without disturbing the floor, ideal for floating floor maintenance.
  • Anodised aluminium β€” corrosion-resistant, scratch-proof, maintenance-free. Outlasts painted profiles.
  • 6 finishes including Electro Polished β€” the electropolished option provides a bright mirror finish for premium or design-led interiors.
  • Up to 2mm height tolerance β€” accommodates minor differences in floor height between the two surfaces without visible stepping.
  • Cuttable to any length β€” metal saw or angle grinder. File edges smooth.

Where to Use a T-Bar Threshold Strip

T-bar profiles are the correct choice for floating floor transitions where the floor may need to be removed:

  • Kitchen tile to living room laminate or LVT
  • Hallway tile to bedroom hardwood or carpet
  • Bathroom tile to landing laminate
  • Office tile to carpet tiles at meeting room entrances
  • Between two rooms with floating floors of different types
  • Covering expansion gaps in long floating floor runs

⚠️ Important: T-bar profiles require a track to be installed beneath them β€” they are not suitable for direct screw-down installation like flat threshold bars. If you want a simpler screw-fix installation, see our flat threshold strip range. T-bars are ideal for floating floors; flat bars are better suited for permanent hard floor installations.

T-Bar vs Flat Threshold β€” Which Should I Choose?

Feature T-Bar (this product) Flat Threshold Bar
Installation Track + clip system Direct screw-fix
Removable βœ… Yes β€” floor can be lifted ❌ Permanent
Best for Floating floors (laminate, LVT, click vinyl) Hard floors (tile, stone, glued wood)
Profile width 26mm (slimmer) 35mm (wider)
Height tolerance Up to 2mm difference Same level only

How to Install a T-Bar Threshold Strip

  1. Measure the doorway width and cut the T-bar track to length using a metal saw. File edges smooth.
  2. Position the track in the centre of the doorway gap over the expansion joint.
  3. Mark and drill fixing holes through the track's pre-drilled positions into the subfloor.
  4. Screw the track down firmly using the supplied fixings.
  5. Lay both floors up to the track on either side, leaving the standard expansion gap.
  6. Clip the T-bar top rail into the track β€” press down firmly until it clicks into place.
  7. Check the finish β€” the T-bar should sit level between both floor surfaces.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a T-bar and a flat threshold strip?

A T-bar clips into a track and can be removed without disturbing the floor, making it ideal for floating floors. A flat threshold bar is screwed directly to the subfloor permanently. Use a T-bar for floating floors (laminate, LVT, click vinyl). Use a flat bar for permanent hard floor installations.

Can I use a T-bar where the floors are slightly different heights?

Yes. This T-bar profile accommodates height differences of up to 2mm between the two floor surfaces. For larger height differences, a ramp or reducer profile is required.

What is Electro Polished finish?

Electro polishing is an electrochemical finishing process that creates a bright, mirror-like surface on the aluminium. It is not the same as raw or brushed polishing β€” the result is a consistent, high-shine finish that resists fingerprints better than standard bright finishes. It is available as a premium finish for luxury interior projects.

Can this T-bar be cut to a shorter length?

Yes. Both the 1.0m and 2.5m lengths cut easily with a metal saw or angle grinder. Cut both the track and the top rail to the same length. File edges smooth before installation.

Is this suitable for bathroom or wet area use?

Anodised aluminium is corrosion-resistant and suitable for bathroom doorways. Ensure the track fixings are appropriate for the substrate and that no moisture can penetrate beneath the track over time.

What is the best colour for grey tiles?

Silver or Inox work best with grey tiles. Silver is brighter and more polished; Inox has a brushed stainless steel appearance that complements grey tones slightly more subtly.

Will the T-bar hold the floor in place?

No. A T-bar is a transition trim β€” it bridges the gap and provides a finished appearance. Floating floors must be restrained by perimeter skirting boards and door architraves in the usual way. The T-bar covers the expansion gap but does not anchor the floor.

How much T-bar strip do I need?

One strip per doorway or floor junction. Standard UK internal doorways (762–838mm) are covered by the 1.0m length. Wide or commercial openings may need the 2.5m length or two 1.0m pieces joined at the centre.
