What is an Aluminium Stair Nosing with Rubber Inserts?

This slim aluminium stair nosing features a clever concealed-screw design β€” two removable rubber anti-slip inserts sit in channels along the tread surface, each hiding a row of fixing screws beneath. To install: remove both rubber inserts, drill and screw the nosing to the step, then press both inserts back into place. The result is a professional finish with no visible fixings, no unsightly screw heads, and twin rubber strips providing excellent grip across the full width of the step edge. At just 36mm wide and 20mm deep, this slim profile suits staircases where minimal overhang is preferred β€” from modern apartments to traditional homes.

1.8m Wider staircases or buy one length for two standard steps (cut to size)

⚠️ Measure your stair tread width before ordering. Longer lengths can be cut with a metal-cutting saw to your exact requirement.

Colour Matching Guide

Finish Appearance Best With
Silver Bright natural silver aluminium White, grey, Scandi interiors, light wood
Gold Warm golden anodised tone Honey pine, warm oak, traditional homes
Champagne Subtle pale neutral β€” between silver and gold New build, neutral and beige tones
Inox Brushed stainless steel look Contemporary, industrial, tile and concrete
Black Matte black β€” bold, modern finish Dark wood, luxury interiors, black ironmongery

Note: All colour options include black rubber inserts β€” the rubber colour is the same across all finishes.

Key Features and Benefits

  • Concealed screw installation β€” dual rubber inserts snap out to reveal fixing holes beneath, then snap back after screwing for a completely clean, screw-free visual appearance
  • Dual anti-slip rubber inserts β€” two parallel rubber strips running the full length provide two lines of grip across the stair nose, exceeding the protection of a single-insert design
  • Slim 36mm Γ— 20mm profile β€” unobtrusive low-profile design that adds safety without dominating the stair aesthetics; ideal for decorative or heritage staircases
  • Hides stair edge imperfections β€” covers chips, worn laminate, split veneer, and damage at the step edge restoring a clean appearance
  • Anodised aluminium body β€” corrosion resistant, will not rust or corrode; suitable for kitchens, utility areas, and covered external steps
  • Pristine manufacturer packaging β€” arrives in excellent condition with correct fixings included; no sourcing additional screws or plugs
  • Suitable for all stair types β€” works on timber, laminate, carpet, vinyl, LVT, tile, and concrete stairs
  • Replaceable rubber inserts β€” if inserts ever wear, they can be replaced without removing the nosing from the step

Where to Use

  • Domestic staircases where aesthetics are a priority β€” no visible screws
  • Period, listed, or heritage properties where minimal visual intrusion is important
  • Apartments, flats, and new builds with clean contemporary interiors
  • Light commercial premises β€” offices, residential care homes, boutique retail
  • Renovation and refurbishment projects β€” restores stair edges without full replacement
  • Rental properties and landlord refurbishments β€” quick and clean to install

⚠️ Not designed for: Very high-traffic industrial or heavy commercial environments where an external surface-mount heavy-duty nosing provides greater protection. For industrial applications, consider a wider heavy-duty profile with an exposed ribbed tread.

How to Install

  1. Measure and prepare β€” measure your stair tread width. If using a longer length, cut to size with a metal-cutting mitre saw and de-burr cut edges with a file.
  2. Remove the rubber inserts β€” carefully pull both rubber anti-slip inserts out of their channels along the nosing. This reveals the pre-drilled fixing holes underneath. Set inserts aside.
  3. Position the nosing β€” place the nosing at the front edge of the stair tread. Ensure it is flush and straight.
  4. Mark and drill β€” use the pre-drilled holes as a template; mark positions with a pencil. Drill pilot holes with a 6mm bit to approx 35mm depth.
  5. Insert plugs β€” press the supplied wall plugs into each drilled hole until flush.
  6. Screw to fix β€” drive the supplied screws through the holes to fix the nosing firmly to the step.
  7. Re-insert rubber strips β€” push both rubber inserts back into their channels until they click into place, hiding all screw heads. The installation is complete with no visible fixings.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do the rubber inserts attach?

The rubber inserts sit in machined grooves running the full length of the aluminium nosing. They press-fit into the channels and hold firmly in place during normal use. To remove, simply pull from one end β€” they flex out easily. Once the nosing is screwed down, press the inserts back in; they will sit flush and remain securely in place.

Can the rubber inserts be replaced if they wear?

Yes. The inserts are removable and can be replaced independently of the nosing. Contact us if you need replacement inserts for this profile β€” we can usually source them separately.

Is this suitable for carpeted stairs?

Yes. The nosing can be installed on the wood substrate beneath carpet, or over an existing carpet edge where the carpet is trimmed back to the stair nose. The slim profile works well with carpet as the low 20mm depth doesn't create a significant trip hazard at the step edge.

How many nosings do I need?

One nosing per step. Count your steps and order accordingly. For most UK staircases (12–13 steps), order 13 of the 0.9m lengths, or consider the 2.7m option which can be cut into three 0.9m lengths β€” potentially more cost-effective per metre.

What is the benefit of two rubber inserts vs one?

Two parallel rubber strips provide grip at two distinct contact points across the nose of the step β€” the leading edge where the foot first contacts the step, and a second line set slightly further back on the tread. This dual-point system provides more consistent grip across different foot positions and different shoe sole patterns.

Can this be used on outdoor steps?

Anodised aluminium is corrosion resistant, so covered external use is fine. The rubber inserts will tolerate outdoor conditions. However, for completely exposed external steps, ensure drainage is adequate around the nosing to prevent standing water beneath the profile.

What tools do I need to install this?

Drill with a 6mm bit appropriate for your stair material, screwdriver or drill with screwdriver bit, and a pencil. All fixings (4 screws and 4 plugs) are included. If cutting to length, a metal-cutting saw is needed.

Why choose an aluminium nosing over plastic or rubber?

Anodised aluminium combines durability, aesthetics, and longevity. It will not crack, warp, or discolour over time the way plastic nosings can. The metal body provides rigid edge support, while the rubber inserts deliver the anti-slip performance β€” giving you the best of both materials in one profile.
