Description

If you are edging a domestic staircase and do not want a row of screw heads marching down every step, this is the profile that solves it. The A37 is a slim 36mm x 20mm anodised aluminium nosing carrying two black rubber anti-slip strips. The strips lift out of their channels, so you fix through the holes underneath and press them back to cover the heads — a clean metal edge and two lines of grip, with nothing visible holding it down. At 36mm across the tread it is one of the narrower nosings available, which suits period houses, flats and refurbishments where a wide commercial profile would look heavy.

Why it works

Two lines of grip instead of one

Most budget aluminium nosings carry a single rubber strip at the leading edge. This one carries two parallel strips across the tread face. That matters because people do not place their feet identically: a foot landing short catches the front strip, one landing long catches the second. It is a contact zone, not a line. No slip resistance rating is published for this profile, so if you are specifying against a documented R-value or pendulum figure, you need a nosing that carries test data.

The fixings stay covered

Concealed fixing is not only cosmetic: exposed screw heads sit proud as the surrounding material compresses underfoot, and the recesses collect grit. Under the rubber, the tread face stays flush.

Anodised rather than coated

The colour is anodised into the surface rather than applied on top, so it does not chip at an edge the way paint or powder coat can. Aluminium does not rust, and the rigid body carries the load while the rubber grips.

  • Two removable rubber anti-slip strips, not one
  • Screw fixing, concealed beneath the strips
  • Five anodised finishes, three lengths

Where it is used

Domestic staircases in houses and flats, where the stair is a visible feature and a heavy commercial nosing would look wrong. Period and listed properties, where a slim profile intrudes less on original joinery. Refurbishment work, covering a chipped or worn step edge rather than specified from new. Light commercial settings — small offices, care homes, boutique retail. Not one for heavy industrial traffic, where a wider surface-mounted nosing takes more abuse.

Choosing the right option

Length first. A standard UK domestic tread is around 860–900mm, so a 0.9m bar covers one step. The 1.8m and 2.7m are the same profile in longer bars: the 2.7m cuts into three domestic steps and works out cheaper per metre than three 0.9m pieces. Measure your treads first — stairs in older houses are rarely uniform top to bottom.

Finish next. Silver is natural anodised aluminium, good against white, grey and light timber. Gold is warm and suits honey pine and traditional interiors. Champagne is a pale neutral between the two, useful in new-build. Inox reads as brushed stainless against tile, concrete and contemporary schemes. Black is matt, for dark timber and black ironmongery. Every finish ships with black rubber — the insert colour does not change.

Installation, use and care

Cut to length with a metal-cutting blade and file the end smooth. Pull both rubber strips out from one end to expose the fixing holes. Sit the nosing on the tread, check it is straight and flush, then mark through the holes and drill — match the bit and depth to the plug supplied and to what you are fixing into, as timber, screed and concrete differ. Fit the plugs, drive the screws, press the strips back in. Clean with a damp cloth and mild detergent; abrasive pads and solvents dull an anodised finish.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use this on outdoor steps?
Internal and covered external steps are the sensible limit. Anodised aluminium resists corrosion, but no weathering rating is published for this profile and the rubber is not specified for full exposure. For open outdoor steps, use a nosing rated for external use.

How many fixings come with each length?
The manufacturer specifies a set of four plugs and screws. The quantity supplied with the 1.8m and 2.7m bars is not published for this line, so on a long run budget for a few extra rather than assuming.

Will it work on carpeted stairs?
Yes — fixed to the timber beneath with the carpet trimmed back to the nose, or over a trimmed edge. At 20mm it is shallow enough not to create a pronounced lip. On thick underlay, check it still sits flat before drilling.

Can the rubber strips be replaced if they wear?
They pull out and press back in, so in principle yes. We do not stock them separately and no replacement part number is published for this profile, so treat the inserts as part of the nosing rather than a serviceable part.

What is the slip rating?
None is published for this profile. The rubber strips are a mechanical anti-slip measure, not a certified one. If your project needs documented slip resistance, contact us and we will point you to a rated profile.

Ordering and delivery

Choose your finish and length above before adding to the basket; price varies by length. Count your treads: one nosing per step. Orders are dispatched from the UK. If you are unsure which profile suits your build-up, or need a slip-rated alternative, contact us before ordering.

Got this for the outdoor stone steps leading up to our garden patio, and Im really chuffed with it! The slim profile fits perfectly, adding a chic finish without disrupting the natural look. The installation was a breeze; those inserts pop right out, so fixing through couldnt have been any simpler. Its held up brilliantly against autumns leafiness and drizzle too—which is more than I can say for my old stair nosings—and has certainly freshened up our steps while keeping them safe.

Delightfully sleek. Unlike the clunky metal trims Ive used before, this aluminium stair nosing was super easy to cut down to size — someone with my lack of DIY skills really appreciates that kind of convenience! It arrived lightning-fast and securely packaged too; no bent edges along the way. Applying it to the steps was straightforward thanks to the nifty design with removable rubber inserts; no unsightly screws for all those tropical footprints here!
