Aluminium Bullnose Stair Nosing 70.58x55mm 5mm Gauge, 1m & 2m

The AN69 is a single-channel bullnose stair nosing for interior staircases carrying medium to heavy foot traffic — hotel and pub circulation stairs, school and college flights, retail and office stairwells, and apartment common parts. It pairs a 70.58mm tread plate, recessed to take a full-width infill, with a deep 55mm rounded nose that wraps the front of the step and returns underneath. Because the nose is formed rather than square, it absorbs trolley wheels, luggage and heel strike without the chipping you get where a floor covering is simply turned over a bare edge. This listing supplies it in 1 metre and 2 metre lengths; if your going needs an exact size, order the cut-to-size version instead, which is cut to any length between 900mm and 3200mm.

Why it works

A 5mm gauge carrier, not a cover strip

The extrusion is aluminium alloy 6063 T6 at a 5.0mm gauge. On a stair edge that thickness is the difference between a profile that stays flat under load and one that dishes between fixings after a couple of years of use. The tread plate is screw-fixed through its face, so the nosing is mechanically held rather than relying on adhesive alone, and the deep bullnose returns under the step to close off the front arris instead of leaving it exposed.

The infill carries the slip resistance

The recessed channel takes a full-width infill that sits proud of the metal, which is what your foot actually lands on. The manufacturer publishes slip resistance values (SRV) by infill family: castellated PVC at SRV 76 wet and 85 dry; smooth textured PVC at 56 wet and 65 dry; ATI49.5 aluminium at 54 wet and 82 dry; and Olympic Grip at 71 wet and 102 dry. These are the manufacturer's stated figures for the infill materials, not our own test results, and they are the reason the infill choice matters more than the finish choice on a stair that gets wet at the entrance.

Colour contrast you can specify

Twenty-one of the castellated PVC infills are solid colours, which lets you set the step edge against the floor covering rather than blending it in. On a flight used by people with reduced vision that contrast is doing more work than any single spec on the sheet.

Where it's used

The manufacturer lists the AN69 for hotels, cafes, clubs, pubs, shops, schools, commercial offices and apartment buildings. In practice it suits any interior flight where the covering is carpet, carpet tile or a resilient sheet and the edge takes constant traffic. The back edge is shaped to abut carpet and carpet tiles, and the profile can be rebated to sit flush into timber steps where you want the tread plate level with the going.

Choosing the right option

There are three choices on this page and the first two are easy to confuse. Finish is the aluminium carrier — the metal you can see around the infill and across the nose. Colour is the infill that sits in the channel. Length is the bar you receive: 1 metre suits most domestic and single-flight goings, while 2 metres is the economical choice if you are cutting several steps from one bar. Mill aluminium is the untreated extrusion and the cheapest of the three finishes; satin and polished are anodised and hold their appearance better in a public stairwell.

For the infill, castellated PVC is the default for interior stairs and carries the highest wet SRV figure of the four families. Smooth textured PVC gives a flatter, more discreet look but the manufacturer's wet figure drops from 76 to 56, so keep it away from entrance flights. The ATI49.5 aluminium infills give a full-metal appearance where you do not want a colour break at all, at the lowest wet figure of the four. Olympic Grip is the coarsest and the highest in the dry. If the stair is external or gets genuinely wet, this is the wrong profile — the manufacturer produces a separate AN69 GRP version with a glass-fibre reinforced anti-slip infill for those conditions.

Installation, use and care

Set out the flight and cut each bar to the going with a mitre saw and a non-ferrous blade. The tread plate is drilled and screw-fixed to the substrate using size 8 screws at regular centres; on timber steps the profile can be rebated so the plate finishes flush. Fit the nosing before the floor covering is dressed up to the back edge, then trim the covering to abut the profile. Routine cleaning is all the maintenance needed — a neutral floor cleaner and a damp mop. Avoid abrasive pads and solvent cleaners on anodised finishes, which will dull them.
