Description

A square-front stair nosing that marks the step from below as well as above

Most stair nosings solve half the problem. They put a hard-wearing, slip-resistant band across the top of the tread, which works for anyone walking down a flight. What they do not do is show where the step edge is when you are climbing, or standing at the foot of a flight looking at a run of risers. This profile adds a second, narrower insert to the vertical face, so the edge reads from both directions. If you are specifying for a school corridor, a hotel landing or a communal stair, this is the version of the 66 x 55mm profile to quote.

Why it works

A deep face that does the visual work

The nose measures 55mm deep against a 66mm tread plate, so the vertical face is a genuine surface rather than a token lip, and that depth is what makes the 13mm highlight legible from a distance. The manufacturer states the riser insert can be colour matched to the tread infill, helping buildings meet visual contrast requirements in line with Equality Act 2010 guidance. Because the highlight is a separate option here, you can also break that match deliberately and run a light highlight against a dark tread.

A gauge that feathers into the floor

The extrusion is 4.25mm thick at the nose and ramps down to 1mm at its back edge. That taper matters on refurbishment work: the thin trailing edge meets a sheet vinyl, LVT or laminate finish without standing proud enough to catch a heel or a mop.

Slip resistance you can quote

The manufacturer publishes slip resistance per infill rather than for the profile as a whole: castellated PVC at SRV Wet 76 / Dry 85, Olympic Grip at SRV Wet 71 / Dry 102, smooth textured PVC at SRV Wet 56 / Dry 65, and the aluminium infill at SRV Wet 54 / Dry 82. All four are the manufacturer's figures, and they are the numbers to put in front of a specifier.

Where it is used

The manufacturer specifies this profile for medium to heavy foot traffic in interior situations: hotels, pubs, clubs, cafes, shops, schools, commercial offices and apartment buildings. It finishes the nose edge of stone and timber stairs, and stairs fitted with ceramics or hard flooring such as laminate, LVT, vinyl and lino. It is internal only, and no external or wet-area rating is published for it.

Choosing the right option

Start with the contrast calculation, because it drives both insert choices. The manufacturer publishes a light reflectance value for every colour, and the usual approach is to pick a tread infill far enough from the LRV of the floor covering for the edge to read clearly. Black castellated is LRV 4.25 at the dark end, Light Grey 12.33 in the middle, and Polar Grey 42.53, Yellow 54.91 and White 84.22 at the light end. Yellow is the usual choice where a stair has to be conspicuous rather than discreet.

Then pick the riser highlight: matching it to the tread infill gives one continuous band around the step edge, while a different colour picks the nose out against the tread. Finally the carrier finish. Satin Aluminium is the anodised, even-toned surface; Mill Aluminium is the untreated mill finish, which costs a little less where the metal will be seen but not scrutinised.

Installation, use and care

Set the nosing out dry first and check the tapered back edge meets the floor covering cleanly across the full width. Fix with size 6 screws at regular centres; if you have ordered it drilled for concealing plugs or a retro-fit infill, the insert presses in afterwards and covers the fixings. Clean with a damp mop and a neutral detergent, and avoid abrasive pads and solvent cleaners on the anodised finish. Worn inserts can be replaced without lifting the carrier.

Ordering and delivery

This listing is 1 metre stock lengths, priced per bar. If your goings are an awkward figure, buy it cut to size instead, at any length from 700mm to 3200mm and the same rate per metre, with no cutting charge. Free colour samples are available. The raked-back version without the riser highlight is listed separately.

Frequently asked questions

What is the 13mm riser highlight for?

A second, narrower insert set into the vertical face below the tread. It marks the step edge for anyone climbing the flight, where the tread insert is hidden from view. The manufacturer states it can be colour matched to the tread infill, helping buildings meet visual contrast requirements in line with Equality Act 2010 guidance.

Can this nosing be used outdoors?

No. The manufacturer specifies it for interior situations only. Do not use it on external steps, entrance treads exposed to weather, or anywhere subject to standing water or frost.

What length will I receive?

A 1 metre bar. For an exact tread width, use the cut-to-size listing instead: any length from 700mm to 3200mm at the same rate per metre, cut before despatch at no extra charge.

How is it fixed down?

With screws; the manufacturer specifies a size 6. It comes undrilled, drilled for concealing plugs, or drilled for a retro-fit infill, so fixings sit hidden under the insert.
