The square-back companion to our raked profile: a 78.5mm aluminium tread plate with a 40mm nose and a carborundum grit insert, for stairs where the floor covering is laid up to the nosing rather than under it. New builds, recovered concrete flights and any job where the going is being finished around the nosing all want this version.
Square back or raked back
The back edge here finishes square, so a vinyl, tile or carpet edge butts cleanly against it and the whole assembly finishes flush. If instead you are fitting over an existing floor that is staying put, the raked back version is the one you want, because its tapered rear edge lands on top of the covering without a lip.
Why carborundum rather than PVC
Aluminium oxide grit in a resin matrix is the hardest of the common anti-slip infills. It does not burnish smooth under footfall the way a ribbed PVC insert does, and it cannot peel like a bonded grit tape. That is why it is specified on entrance steps, plant rooms, external flights and anywhere footwear arrives wet.

Choosing the right option
Finish. Mill is plain untreated aluminium for industrial and back-of-house stairs. Satin is anodised, holds its appearance in a public area and resists finger marking.
Drilling. Undrilled lets you set the fixings out on site. Pre-drilled arrives countersunk on centres and saves time on a long flight.
Length. Order the bar that covers your going in one piece, or use the cut-to-size version for anything between 250mm and 2750mm.
Installation, use and care
Fix the nosing before the floor covering goes down so the covering can be trimmed tight to the square back. The substrate must be sound, clean and dry. Fix at roughly 300mm centres, starting about 50mm from each end, and bed in a structural adhesive as well as screwing on external stairs. Clean with a stiff brush and water; avoid acid and solvent cleaners.
