Tread extenders are fitted to older stairs, and older stairs are rarely a standard width. This is the same 82.5mm aluminium extender as our 1m, 1.5m and 2m stock bars, cut here to the exact millimetre you specify between 250mm and 2750mm, tolerance plus or minus 5mm.
An 82.5mm aluminium section fixed to the front of an existing tread to increase the effective going, carrying an aluminium oxide grit insert along the new leading edge. It is the retrofit answer where a stair is too shallow underfoot and rebuilding the flight is not an option. It does not change the rise, and it is not on its own a route to compliance.
An extender that stops short of the string leaves a step that is deeper in the middle than at the edges, which is worse than leaving it alone. Workshop cutting gives clean square ends and lets you order each step to its own measurement.
| Material | Aluminium with carborundum grit insert |
| Width | 82.5 mm |
| Cut length range | 250 mm to 2750 mm, tolerance +/- 5 mm |
| Finishes | Mill or satin |
| Fixing | Screw fixed. Undrilled or pre-drilled |
Measure every tread; on an old stair the variation is often 10mm or more. Between two walls take 3mm to 5mm off. Check that the resulting projection is the same on every step, since an inconsistent going is more hazardous than a uniformly shallow one. Custom lengths are non-returnable except for faults.
Cut lengths are made to order; allow additional working days over a stock bar. Standard UK mainland delivery is a flat rate. Insert colour is confirmed with your order.

No frills here; just gets the job done well. Installing the extender on a historic stone staircase was straightforward, thanks to its adaptable length and solid construction. Compared to similar pieces, this offers genuine value for money without compromising performance for those updating older staircases.
Needed to enhance accessibility on the front path of a community facility, and this aluminium piece was just right. The custom sizing option made it hassle-free to fit perfectly along the brick step edge. Delivery was super quick, and its arrival in sturdy packaging meant everything stayed pristine despite the length. Its been reliable through rain and shine with folks coming in and out all day!
Came securely packaged, making installation a breeze. Used this extender in our apartment buildings busy hallway and its been a lifesaver during wet weather, offering confidence with every step. The fact that you can specify the exact size meant it fitted perfectly, leaving no gaps or wiggle room.
Wasnt sure at first how precise the delivery would be, but this bit of kit arrived spot on time and was impeccably packaged. Chosen for a metal staircase in an industrial setting, the extender feels robust underfoot and still looks great around stacks of heavy goods. Its cutting to custom lengths is a real boon—especially knowing it wont scrape or dent easily—and tacking down the stair tread has added solid feedback after several months in use.
Fitted it to the stairs in a busy hospital corridor and it still looks just as neat months later. The tread has held up brilliantly under all that foot traffic, maintaining its sleek finish without a scratch. Its great seeing it blend so well with the decor while staying just as sturdy!
Got this for replacing the worn-out stair tread at the back entrance of our campus library. Cutting it to a specific length was straightforward, and once secured, it looked very sleek against the concrete steps with its aluminium finish reflecting the light cleverly. Its definitely robust enough to handle the heavy foot traffic here.
Impressively precise. Got these step extenders cut perfectly to size for an old staircase leading up to a library I work in. Fitting was straightforward—no fuss getting it to line up because each one arrived just right. With the stair tread installed, the stairs look revitalised and feel secure underfoot even on tricky stone steps.
