Anti-Slip GRP Sheet 3mm | R13 Silicon Carbide, Black

A gantry, ramp or walkway that has polished up under traffic rarely justifies lifting and relaying the substrate. This 3mm GRP sheet is the overlay that goes over the top of it: a glass-reinforced panel with a silicon carbide grit surface bonded into the resin, supplied in four stock sizes and fixed down with adhesive or screws. At 3mm the step up onto it stays low enough to feather in at doorways and along the edge of a walkway, and it will follow a surface that has settled or gone slightly undulating. Choose black or grey where the overlay should disappear into its surroundings, or yellow where the walking route needs to read at a distance.

Why it works

The grip is in the sheet, not on it

Anti-slip paints and tapes sit on the surface and wear off it. Here the silicon carbide is bonded into the resin as the sheet is made, so the grit is part of the panel rather than a coating over it. The sheet is rated R13 to DIN 51130, the top band of that scale, and separately achieves a low slip potential result to BS 7976-2, the pendulum method UK risk assessments are usually written around.

3mm is thin enough to fit around

Thickness is the practical constraint on any overlay: a thick panel creates a lip that has to be ramped or trimmed at every doorway, gully and handrail post. At 3mm the edge is low enough to chamfer with adhesive or cover with a thin trim, which makes this the usual choice for retrofitting a walkway rather than building a new deck. It is also why it is suited to undulating surfaces: a thin laminate follows a floor that is no longer flat instead of bridging the hollows.

Rated for outside, and for the cold

GRP does not rot, rust or absorb water, and the sheet has an operating range of −50°C to +90°C and is suitable for indoor and outdoor use alike — frost on an external stair, wash-down in a process area, or a plant room where steel chequer plate would sweat. Fire performance is published too: Bfl-s1 to DIN EN 13501.

Where it's used

External walkways and access gantries, loading-bay edges, plant rooms and pump houses, factory routes that flood or ice up, ramps and crossovers, pontoons and jetties, and worn landings on fire escapes. Indoors it suits wash-down floors and machine standing areas where a smooth screed has become a slip risk.

Choosing the right option

Start with thickness. This sheet is 3mm; the same range is made in a 5mm version, listed separately, and the thicker panel is the one for forklift, pallet-truck and barrow traffic, or where the substrate is uneven enough that the overlay must carry a load across a hollow. For foot traffic on a sound surface, 3mm is the standard choice and the easier of the two to edge in.

Then work the sheet count from area: 1.2 x 2.4m covers 2.88m², 1.2 x 1.2m covers 1.44m², 0.8 x 1.2m covers 0.96m², 0.8 x 1m covers 0.8m². Not all four sizes are made in all three colours — black stops at 1.2 x 1.2m, yellow is made only in the two larger sizes. The colour range is intended to meet Equality Act visual-contrast requirements; no LRV figure is published per colour — ask us if your specification calls for a measured value.

Installation, use and care

Bond or screw the sheet to the existing surface. Either way the substrate must be clean, dry, sound and free of loose paint, laitance, grease or curing compound. Cut with a diamond or carbide-tipped blade, face-up and supported close to the line, and wear eye and respiratory protection — GRP dust is an irritant. Keep butt joints tight and dress the exposed perimeter edge so nothing can lift. Screw fixings want pre-drilled clearance holes and countersunk heads set flush.

Frequently asked questions

Can I lay this over an existing concrete or steel walkway?

Yes — that is what it is for. The sheet is bonded or screwed onto the existing surface; concrete, timber and steel are all viable provided they are sound and clean. It is an overlay, not a structural deck, so whatever is underneath still carries the load.

How does the 3mm sheet differ from the 5mm one?

Same material, same silicon carbide surface, same R13 figure; the difference is laminate thickness and therefore stiffness. 3mm is the retrofit overlay for foot traffic on a sound surface; 5mm is for wheeled traffic and for spanning a surface that is no longer flat.

Can I see the certificate for the R13 rating?

R13 to DIN 51130 and the low slip potential result to BS 7976-2 are the published test results for this sheet. If your specification needs the certificate itself, ask us for a copy.
