Description

Worn, chipped or slippery step edges are the most common cause of falls on a staircase, and taking a flight out of service to rebuild it is rarely an option in a working building. This GRP stair nosing is the retrofit answer: a 55mm x 55mm angle that caps the existing step edge in one piece, adding a hard, mineral-gritted wearing surface and a clearly defined leading edge without touching the structure underneath. It goes straight over timber, steel, concrete, stone and tiled steps in offices, schools, plant rooms, loading bays and public entrances. Five stock lengths from 800mm to 3m and nine colours let you cover the full width of the tread and set whatever visual contrast the site needs. For flights fully exposed to the weather, the same profile is covered on our outdoor GRP stair nosing page.

Why it works

A gritted surface that wears rather than polishes

GRP – glass reinforced plastic – is a fibreglass laminate, and on this profile the anti-slip grit is bonded into the resin rather than stuck on as a tape or a coating. That distinction matters on a stair. A self-adhesive abrasive strip fails in two ways: the adhesive lifts at the edges, and the abrasive face rubs smooth. A gritted GRP nosing keeps working as it wears, because the grit runs through the surface instead of sitting on top of it. The medium grit grade is the general-purpose choice – coarse enough for work boots and wet treads, but not so aggressive that it snags hands, shopping bags or soft-soled shoes in a busy public stairwell.

A one-piece angle, not a patch

The section wraps the tread and the riser together, so the vulnerable front arris of the step is covered rather than filled. Crumbling concrete nosings and softened timber edges are held and protected underneath it, which is usually cheaper and far quicker than casting a repair. GRP does not rust, rot or corrode, so the repair does not become the next maintenance liability the way a steel or aluminium patch does on a stair that gets mopped, gritted or washed down.

Where it is used

Internal staircases in offices, schools, hospitals and public buildings; steel access stairs on plant, gantries and mezzanines; timber steps in leisure centres, workshops and back-of-house routes; commercial kitchens and cold stores where footwear arrives wet; and retail, transport and residential common stairs where the concrete nose has worn round. It works equally well outside – the weather-exposed case is covered on the outdoor page linked above.

Choosing the right length and colour

Measure the full width of the tread and buy the next length up. GRP cuts cleanly with an angle grinder or a fine-tooth blade, and it is far better to trim 60mm off a 1200mm nosing than to leave 40mm of unprotected edge at one end of the step. The 2m and 3m lengths are bought either for wide flights or to be cut down economically across several treads.

On colour, decide whether you are marking the step or matching it. Yellow, white and buff give the strongest contrast against grey concrete and are the usual choice where the stair has to read clearly for visually impaired users. Black, mid grey and brown recede into darker treads and timber, where the nosing is there to protect the edge rather than to announce it. Green, red and blue are normally specified for zoning – colour-coding routes, floor levels or plant areas so the stair matches the rest of the site marking.

Installation, use and care

Fit to a clean, dry and structurally sound edge. The usual method is a bed of high-strength construction adhesive along the underside of both legs, with mechanical fixings driven through the tread leg into concrete, timber or steel. Drill and countersink so screw heads finish below the grit line. In service, clean with a stiff brush and ordinary detergent: the grit holds dirt, so brushing does more than mopping. Avoid solvents and wire wool, which polish the wearing face.

Frequently asked questions

Will a 55mm x 55mm nosing suit my steps?

It suits any step with a reasonably square front edge and at least 55mm of usable tread and riser at the nose. On steps with a rounded or badly broken edge, pack and level the arris first, or the nosing will rock on the high points.

Can I cut it to length on site?

Yes. Cut GRP with an angle grinder or a fine-tooth blade, wearing eye and respiratory protection, and seal the cut end with resin or paint if it will be exposed to standing water.

What is the difference between medium, fine and coarse grit?

Grit grade is a trade-off between grip and comfort. Fine is used where people go barefoot or where a smoother surface is wanted underfoot; coarse is for heavy industrial traffic and severe contamination. Medium is the general-purpose commercial grade and covers most stairs, internal and external.

What slip resistance figure does it achieve?

The manufacturer does not publish a pendulum, PTV or R-value figure for this line, so we do not quote one. If your specification requires a tested figure, contact us and we will request the data from the manufacturer before you order.

Can I use the same profile on an outdoor flight?

Yes – it is the identical section, and GRP does not rust or rot. If the stair is fully weather-exposed, read the outdoor page linked at the top, which covers fixings, cut-end sealing and winter maintenance in more detail.

Works a treat once you find the right placement for it. This grip edge was mainly used to update the museums timeworn outdoor entryway, and I must say it’s made a considerable difference. While not cheap, its far more economical than other solutions that require downtime or major fixes. Id definitely opt for this solution again if faced with similar issues elsewhere—the stair nosing delivered solid value without fuss over open hours.

Needed a quick fix for the busy emergency exit in our office without shutting it down. Fitting this edge material was straightforward, even during peak hours. Its perfectly suited for heavy foot traffic, and so far, its holding up nicely with minimal signs of wear.

Arrived swiftly, just in time for a splash of rain. Installed these on the metal steps at our local parks outdoor amphitheater and couldnt be happier with the choice. Everyone feels more secure navigating up and down them now, even when it gets busier during events! Theyve got this understated yet snug look, proving that the stair nosing isnt just about functionality but contributes to a better aesthetic too.

Wasnt sure at first about how well the delivery would go for something so specific, but it arrived neatly packed and right on time! The retrofitting was surprisingly smooth too, even on our slightly uneven basement treads. This stair nosing really matches what Id hoped in terms of grip—weve got quite a few folks marching around here and its holding up excellently!

Anti-Slip Stair Nosing 55 x 55mm GRP Medium Grit, 9 Colours

Installed it recently on the entry steps of our local library. The nosing has held up remarkably well, showing no noticeable wear despite constant foot traffic. It feels incredibly robust underfoot and securely in place, which is especially reassuring during those wet days when traction on concrete could be an issue.

Surprisingly straightforward. Needed to fit this stair strip onto some uneven stone steps at a museum, so I was pleased to find it cut easily with a standard saw. The installation process was quick, and its effectiveness in adverse weather has been remarkable—no ones slipping on those stairs now. Would use these again for projects where safetys key.

Got this for my home staircase to spruce it up a bit since the old edges were looking quite worn. The stair nosing fits snugly against each step, and I love how the grit finish catches the light beautifully; its almost become an unexpected feature. Certainly makes a subtle yet stylish improvement, blending seamlessly with my hallway décor while offering practical benefits too.
