Why it works

Elfin is a hard-wearing commercial cloth rather than a soft furnishing fabric, so it holds its appearance through repeated moves.

This panel is fire retardant to BS 476 Part 7 Class 1 for surface spread of flame, which is the surface-lining classification most facilities managers and fire risk assessors will ask you to evidence. Stability comes from the two grey powder-coated feet supplied with every screen. Start with height, because that is what decides what the screen actually hides. At 120cm the panel screens a seated person and their monitor while leaving the room open and daylight moving through it, which suits desk banks and reception counters. At 160cm it blocks the sightline of most people walking past but still lets you see over from standing. At 180cm you get near-full standing privacy, which is what consultation bays, changing corners and exam layouts need.

Then pick width to suit the run. A 120cm panel suits a single desk or a narrow gap; 140cm and 160cm cover a two-desk bay or a corridor opening with fewer joints. For longer runs, stand several screens in a shallow zig-zag rather than a straight line, which is far more stable. Colour is practical rather than decorative: black hides marks in high-traffic areas, while royal blue suits reception, education and healthcare spaces.

Installation, use and care

Unpack the panel flat, fit the two feet to the underside of the frame, then stand the screen up with a second person steadying it. Check it sits level and does not rock, and adjust on uneven floors before you load anything against it. Move screens by lifting rather than dragging, and never lean a panel on its fabric face where the trim can be crushed. Vacuum the fabric with an upholstery head and spot-clean marks with a damp cloth and mild detergent, working inwards. Do not soak the panel or use solvent cleaners.
