Description

Where a stair is outdoors, wet, or takes industrial traffic, a two-part aluminium nosing with a PVC insert is the wrong tool: the insert works loose, the channel fills with grit, and the fixings gradually rattle. A one-piece GRP nosing has none of those failure points. The whole angle is the wearing surface, with aluminium oxide grit moulded into the polyester rather than bonded onto it, so it cannot delaminate. Choose the 55 x 55mm equal angle or the 70 x 30mm deep-tread profile, in yellow, white or black, in four stock lengths up to 2.8m.

Technical drawing of the heavy duty GRP stair nosing: 55 x 55mm and 70 x 30mm cross-sections, approx. 4mm thick with grit, chamfered back edge and fixing plan
Both profiles drawn to scale, with the fixing plan. Dimensions in mm.

Why one-piece GRP

Nothing to work loose

There is no carrier, no channel and no separate insert. That removes the most common maintenance call on external stairs, and it is why GRP is specified for fire escapes, gantries, plant access stairs and coastal or exposed steps. The laminate will not warp, stretch or swell with temperature swings, and it is rated for heavy foot traffic.

The grit is through the surface, not on it

A bonded grit tape wears through to a smooth backing within a couple of winters on a busy external flight. The heavy duty aluminium oxide grit on this nosing keeps presenting fresh sharp particles as the polyester wears back with it, on the tread face and down the riser face.

It does not corrode

GRP is unaffected by salt, most cleaning chemicals and standing water, and it will not set up a bimetallic reaction against steel stringers or handrail fixings.

No trip lip at the back

The rear edge of the tread leg is chamfered, so the nosing finishes flush-feeling against the step instead of leaving a 4mm ledge for a heel or a trolley wheel to catch. At roughly 4mm thick including the grit, it adds almost nothing to the step height.

Backed by a 10 year guarantee

The profile carries a 10 year guarantee against breakage when it is correctly installed, which is the bond-and-screw method set out below.

Where it is used

External concrete and steel steps, fire escapes, factory and warehouse stairs, loading docks, plant rooms, gantries and walkways, agricultural buildings, schools, stations and public stairs where the maintenance budget favours a fit-and-forget nosing over one that needs its insert replaced.

Choosing the right option

Profile. Take the 55 x 55mm where the riser is exposed and needs protecting, and wherever Building Regulations contrast applies: Approved Document K 1.7a asks for a contrasting nosing at least 55mm wide on both the tread and the riser in buildings other than dwellings, and this equal angle gives exactly that in one piece. Take the 70 x 30mm where the grip band across the tread is the priority or a deep nose would foul an existing detail.

Colour. Yellow is the high-visibility option for industrial and escape routes. White gives strong tonal contrast on dark concrete or steel. Black is the discreet choice on pale stone and the one that shows dirt least on a heavily used external stair.

Length. Order the bar that covers your going in one piece. If your treads are an awkward width, or every flight differs, order from the cut-to-size version of this nosing and we will cut each piece to the millimetre between 250mm and 2800mm.

Installation, use and care

The substrate must be sound, clean, dry and reasonably level. On worn concrete, make good the arris first, or the nosing will bridge a hollow and crack under load. Dry fit, then drill on the grit centreline about 50mm in from each end and every 400-500mm between, closer on soft or uneven substrates; countersink and pre-drill before drilling the step. Run a 6mm bead of structural adhesive around the underside about 15mm in from the edges, press firmly, and fix with stainless steel countersunk screws. A firm bond takes about an hour. Trim with a 4mm diamond blade or a 1mm angle-grinder disc, wearing goggles, gloves and respiratory protection; GRP dust is an irritant. Clean with a stiff brush and water.

Frequently asked questions

Can it be bonded rather than screwed?

On a sound internal substrate, yes, with a structural adhesive. On external or heavily trafficked stairs we would always screw fix as well, and the 10 year guarantee assumes a correct installation.

Will the grit wear smooth?

Not in the way a bonded grit tape does. The aluminium oxide is moulded through the surface, so it wears back with the polyester and keeps exposing fresh particles.

Which profile for a steel fire escape?

Usually 55mm x 55mm, so the equal angle covers the front edge of the tread plate and the top of the riser in one piece.

Which profile meets Building Regulations?

The 55 x 55mm. It gives the 55mm contrasting band on both tread and riser that Approved Document K 1.7a sets for buildings other than dwellings. Pick the colour that contrasts most with your stair: yellow or white on grey concrete, black on pale stone.

What if my treads are not a stock length?

Order the cut-to-size version linked above and specify each length between 250mm and 2800mm, tolerance plus or minus 5mm.

For the price, you cant go wrong—it blended perfectly with our worn-out stone steps at the schools basement entrance. The heavy duty stair nosing really hugged the existing floor, providing a snug fit and immaculate safety improvement without obstruction or mess. Seeing it hold up so well against foot traffic through our wintery blues gives me peace of mind!

Works a treat for industrial sites and rainy UK weather. Slapped it over the wooden steps we keep by our site office, and this heavy duty stair nosing makes you realise the two-part systems are a right hassle in comparison. Has saved us lots of trouble staying secure, sturdy and an absolute steal compared to posh alternatives that can squash under pressure or shake loose.

Had to reinforce the factory stairwell which faces tonnes of industrial footfall daily. Out of the box, this fibreglass product seemed robust enough to handle harsh conditions and weather exposure. Its been a few months, and it still stands strong without any visible wear or looseness—not something you find in most similar options.

Came well-packaged and ready to install on the bricks leading to the library. The stair nosing fitted perfectly, offering fantastic traction even in the rain and has proved its worth by keeping steady under plenty of footfall. Pleased with how well it holds up against both weather and wear.

Took a punt on this gear, and Im glad I did—arrived bang on time despite the unreliable couriers in my area. The stair nosing was well-packaged, saving me hassle during installation at our warehouse entrance. Its fitted nicely and given the steps a sturdy edge to handle all types of weather without slipping. Wouldnt hesitate to pick it up again if we decide to expand.

Pretty decent stuff. Needed to sort out the wooden steps around the trailer at a worksite, and this stair nosing proved handy. Snapped it to size pretty easily, and it didn’t slip even with the usual outdoor muck getting tossed around.

Installed it on the tread edges over the steel stairs down at the shipping dock. Appreciate that its held up in this busy environment for several months now without a hitch, and it didnt break the bank either. A tad gruff getting it fixed initially, but no inserts falling out or rattling from traffic—thats rock solid.

Got this to revamp the stone steps leading down to our schools basement entrance. The stair nosing looks surprisingly sleek and adds a clean, modern touch against the worn stones. Installing it was remarkably simple, even on a chilly morning with leftover salted grit around.
